IbisFla said:Ann, I can definitely see the similarities. I'm sure there was an Eastern Towhee adult nearby, so this most likely is the baby. Wow - I love seeing new birds at my feeders Hurray! Thanks again, Ann!!

You're welcome! The key points in this case besides the beak are the white on that wing & the white along the outer edge of the tail as well as the white tip on corner of tail.

Last year I put up hummer feeders and got them there and at my plants. My nectar plants bloom later as I am still working on filling the beds, so I put the feeders up again this year. The damn squirrels are drinking the nectar! Not to mention that they are chewing the "flower" parts of my feeders. Now I have to take the feeders down until I get more baffles.

I think I've read that hummers have a regular "route" that they take, and pass on to future generations. If you're on a migration route, you will always have tons of hummers at migration time.

Places with permanent resident populations have it a little more complicated in that you need to attract some hummers off their regular route to visit your yard. Certainly planting the plants they like will help with this, and then if you install feeders as well, you may get more since there is a good regular food source. Then you will be on their route and probably see them more and more as they pass the info on to their progeny.

Ann I think you Nailed it , well done Thumbs up

as far as hummers I had more early blooming hummer plants then any other year , and my only sighted hummer still disappeared as usual.
I won't start worrying unless they don't show up steady for the next 3 months , july , august and september are always the main months for us.

Lori , I have both my feeders high up , one on a suction cup window hanger and the other on a permanent window hanger.
both easy to get to and clean / refill but far from any squirrels reach. It was done mostly to give hummer's space of their own away from other bigger birds and feeders.
not to mention easier to see

I completely forgot to tell you guys about something that we saw the other day. The hubs saw it & called me to come watch. A male ruby throated hummer was seeing his reflection in the side mirror of the van & thought it was a rival! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious! He was NOT happy about that "other guy" being here. He kept fighting with his own reflection. Hilarious! Hilarious! Hilarious!

Our first year here we were overrun with hummers. And there were no plants at the house but lots of wild stuff around. I could sit out here holding the feeder and they would come eat. They would almost fly into us as we went in & out the doors! 2008 was a really bad year in the spring with lots of heavy rains across a wide area that delayed migration movement. We have never rebounded to the numbers we had then, but we have a good population. I have had very little luck with plants that the hummers like. Though I recently did purchase a pestemon and a lobelia. But the likelihood of them surviving are about zero!

Our hummers stay year round here, so feeders stay year round too. Not very many nectar plants in winter, but they also glean tiny insect from whatever is available. During migration it gets really crazy. We don't have a squirrel plague here, but I had to move one of my feeders from the arbor to a shepards hook when I caught a possum drinking from it. The orioles finally started using their own feeder, mostly, but the hummers decided bigger is better, so they use that too. The warblers manage to get some of it when they're here, and now the house finches are trying...they're really fond of the grape jelly that the orioles ignore. The main draw is running water and plenty of trees/ shrubs/ vines for them to perch in while they wait their turn and check for danger.

I tried to place my feeders where the birds would feel "safe". The hummingbird feeder is right in the butterfly garden so there's lots of fun plants to nectar on, too. My house is surrounded by oaks, so that helps. As for the regular bird feeder, I actually took photos the other day to show where I put it.

This is my side yard. You can see oaks, a pine, the neighbor's palm. The blob on the right side in front of the fence is my Flowering Maple (Abutilon). The oak tree just to the right of the feeder is a popular spot for the Tufted Titmice to wait their turn.

Thumb of 2016-06-28/mellielong/2bda04

Looking further to the left you can see another oak with my endangered Yellow Anise. It's also a popular shrub to hang out in. It's pretty dense. The baby tree in between and behind the oaks is a Flatwoods Plum. I tried to plant this side with lots of natives. Also, we needed erosion control because the rain was washing all the dirt into the backyard.

Thumb of 2016-06-28/mellielong/721580

And right next to the bird feeder is a Parsley Hawthorne. I actually have three of them and I planted them years ago but they grow slow. The birds like to sit in it, too while waiting their turn. The squirrel also uses it as a launching pad. I put the feeder right next to it so my brother wouldn't have to move the feeder when he mowed.

Thumb of 2016-06-28/mellielong/3d1571

As for today, I was sitting here watching CNN and heard a loud squawking. The Blue Jay was sitting on top of the Shepard's Hook and then would get on the ground and eat some seeds. The Tufted Titmice didn't seem to want to give up the feeder as three of them were flitting around and the Blue Jay flew off to an oak tree. That's where I found him when I went outside. Also, I wondered why my pictures have been a little blurry and I realized my lens is fogging up from the humidity. Gotta start carrying my lens cloth with me.

Thumb of 2016-06-28/mellielong/f82018

I think my Tufted Titmice are getting bigger. They must be eating well. Hilarious!

But most exciting was I finally saw one of the hummingbirds! Hurray! Female came by for a drink but got scared when I finally had to start waving my arms to get the mosquitoes off me.

Yup, a mascara brush. Wash well (you can use an x-ed out toothbrush to get off all of the makeup). Perfect for cleaning the ports on hummingbird feeders.

My feeder needed cleaning so I tried this yesterday. Works like a charm. Thanks for such a great idea. I'm going to pass this on to my daughter. Thumbs up Thumbs up

Zika isn't a worry as far as getting sick goes. They say you hardly even know you're sick when you have it. It's only dangerous to pregnant women whose unborn kidlets could be born with microcephalus. The worry is once it's in the mosquito population, if you're sick and get bitten, that mosquito can then spread the disease to anybody else it bites. The more people get it the more it can spread and then every pregnant woman will have to stay indoors for their whole pregnancy to be safe. An ugly scenario. But they're not even sure we have mosquitoes here that can carry it.

On the mascara brush, it really IS a great idea! I always use waterproof mascara otherwise it sweats right off me instantly. Just clean the brush with makeup remover first, then wash with dish detergent.

Good info. on the Zika virus Elaine. Honestly I had not paid a whole lot of attention to it. Fortunately we (shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!) don't hardly have any of those blood sucking beasts around these parts. Hurray!
