I must have had "the look" because when we tried to leave Hawaii my luggage was stopped and checked several times while my amused husband's went straight through. The agents kept repeating "you know you can buy inspected plants at the airport shop." I swore I did not have anything in my bags but they sure thought I did. I guess my bags, which have often carried plants, alerted the sniffer dogs.

Jim, a favor please. I have a plant that the tag says Encyclia Citrina. I have seen the same plant listed as Cattleya citrina and Euchile citrina. What does the BOOK say.
Thanx

Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing Ted, I looked it up on Orchid Species . Com before I got the one I had. That poor baby has been reclassified to death. I'm waiting to see what is now, too. I'd like to try it again.

Mine bloomed once. I don't do well with deciduous orchids. I don't have space for zones...or the expertise .

I bet you couldn't have guessed this one, Ted and Carol. The correct name is now Prosthechea citrina and it is a species so no capital "c".

Carol, is this one truly deciduous?
I grew this one for ca. 10 years. After seeing only plant growth and no blooms for years, I thought I had a dud and when I saw another plant at a show, I picked it up too. Now I had two duds!! Never saw a bloom and figured I just couldn't grow them. Too bad, they are gorgeous!
In my hands they started to become deciduous about the year before they graced my compost pile..... Big Grin

Ursula, I really couldn't find much info on that plant, but I bought it as a bare root with the name Euchili citrine, then found out Andy's had it under another name. Shrug!

Great, just another 6 years before it goes on the heap. Hilarious!
Hey Jim, I found it called Prosthechea karwinskii citrina,

"Recently the species Prosthechea citrina has been split up. This form is now known as Prosthechea karwinskii. I'm not sure it pays to keep up with the name changes on this genera, but the species is another story. Since I have been growing it it has gone from the genus Cattleya to Encyclia to Euchile and now Prosthecea. What ever you call it, you don't forget the wonderfu, citrus fragrance once you have smelled it. It is a pendant plant with distinctive grey-green foliage and a large yellow flower if your culture is right. The flower on these parent plants are about 4" wide. It is endemic to Mexico where it grows at elevations from 4300 to 8600 feet. It needs a cooler, drier period in the winter to perform well.

Culture: Warm, wet, shady summers with enough air movement that the mount dries quickly. Cool, dry winters. These are grown out doors in mild weather climates on the West Coast and can be grown with cymbidiums and Laelia anceps temperatures."

Ya gotta love it

I can find a C. karwinskii and a Prosthechea karwinskii and both are synonyms for Prostheskii citrina. I can find no listing for Prosthechea karwinskii citrina.

Kew lists Prosthechea citrina as the accepted name
http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/named...
And here are the several synonyms
http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/synon...
Sobralia citrina
Cattleya citrina
Epidendrum citrinum
Encyclia citrina
Euchile citrina

Prosthechea karwinskii is the accepted name of a different Prosthechea
It won't let me copy the link, you need to type into the line Prosthechea karwinskii
http://apps.kew.org/wcsp/qsear...
Euchile karwinskii and Cattleya karwinskii are synonyms of that one.
