How many of the same type tomato plants should be planted to get good results. I have heard anywhere from one to twelve plants. There has to be a good number so you get crop and not be overcome by to many. Thank you from a semi green thumb.

You can get plenty of tomatoes in a season from one plant. If you're living in an apartment and on your own, one or two plants will be lots. But if you're feeding a family, a few more would be good. It also depends upon how many tomatoes you (and your friends/family) eat. Are you going to make sauce? Gazpacho? Or just use them in sandwiches and salads?

If you plant cherry tomatoes, you might still be overwhelmed by too many little 'maters by the end of summer even with only one or two plants.

I had 3 plants this winter in my greenhouse. It was too many for the two of us. I ended up giving them away.

I just planted my tomatoes . I try to plant two of each of the ones I really like I DO plant a lot of
cherry tomatoes Because for some reason they NEVER make it inside the house So I totaled
out to 21 plants this year. Hopefully they will do good.

You can and will always find people to take Home Grown Maters so plant away and write down the ones
you really like for next season

Dan, there's no need to plant more than 1 of any particular type of tomato (other than the reason that you love that type and want lots of it). How many plants you need is totally dependent on what you want to do with them... do you just eat them fresh? Do you want to can tomatoes and make tomato juice and sauce and salsa (like I do) ? Do you eat a lot of little cherry type tomatoes in salads and for munching? It's really something you have to kind of work out over a few years of trial and error, but just for a starting point:

I usually grow 12-14 plants in my garden, which include a couple of small-fruited types, and I have more than plenty to eat fresh (LOTS of BLTs!), plus making roasted tomato sauce (about 30 cups), salsa (maybe 3 dozen pints), and tomato juice (about 12 quarts), as well as some peeled tomatoes frozen for adding to chili and such.

Being overcome by too many tomatoes is sort of a dream of mine...
