Thread OP

I've searched many times for an accurate name for this lovely iris, any ideas?
The color may fade more in our western sun than other areas.
Standard: cream blending down to pale yellow at base, a bit of rich yellow at center.
Fall: light lavender that fades to pale; more towards pink than blue.
Beard: Gold yellow at base fading to white at outside.
40" tall. 5-7 blooms per stem. Mid-season bloomer, reasonably prolific.
Thanks!

Edits: Definitely not PBF (purple-base foliage), but thanks for asking.
Thanks for the other name clues; no match yet.
I've added one more photo from early morning.
Does anyone know if iris can spontaneously mutate?
That is, can a new variety spring up on its own?

That is a lovely iris, Smithrose. I don't know its name but I don't think it is too old. Someone on here should be able to give you some ideas to compare it to and welcome to the iris forum. Smiling Welcome!

Thanks grannysgarden, I appreciate the welcome. From the iris's form, and what little I know, I would guess it is from 1970 or later. I think it was here in 2002 when we moved in.

Also, you need to check on the foliage to see if it is purple at the base or PBF (purple based foliage). Some may start the year with PBF and then it will fade and some have more purple on the leaves than others. Good to know when trying to narrow down the field a bit.

Welcome!

No, it is too light to be All About Spring, and the standards are the wrong color. Closer to something like Old Loyalties, but our database is short on yellow & pink combos with good enough pictures for comparison.

Yours is a very pretty iris. Hope someone can ID it for you.

Have you tried the data base search? I would type in bicolor and cream and see what comes up.
It looks kind of like the ones I would see in the Ernst catalogs, where they would group all the similar colors together...not too old, but before they all got super ruffly. Is it always that pale? I love it, by the way! Or just search for Ernst as the hybridizer.

That is assuming Ernst WAS the hybridizer.

I have no idea who the hybridizer was! That was just a suggestion. Funny, but I had a pastel noid that seemed to spring out of nowhere and I was wondering if it was perhaps a seedling from some others near by. if I was lucky I remembered to separate it out of a jumbled clump of rhizomes and plant separately, and I will take a pic of what I got. Kind of a similar pale Edith Wolford looking bloom. Which I had never had.

Hi Caitlin, Thanks, I thought you had a great suggestion to check under Ernst. I am leaving no clue unfollowed! Funny you should mention Edith Wolford because that is a variety I always wanted-- EW being much more blue than this lavender mystery iris.
