Looks like a fungus to me. I've seen this picture before but didn't investigate it.

I just posted my reply into that thread, Carol.

Here is essentially a repeat.
They are Monotropa uniflora, pictures were taken of wet plants. Nice photos!
I see them in damp Summers also in our Pennsy woods in certain spots.

I saw your post, Ursula. Thanks for responding. I have seen Indian pipe in the mountains, and thought that's what that looked like. To me, it certainly doesn't look like an orchid.
