This year I'm seeing lots of bracts. On every plant. I swear they weren't there the past year. My DLs are in their third year here. I read that bracts on young plants indicate that there will be more branching.
Are my DLs getting adult? But they were fans of adult plants when bought. So does it mean that they start everytime from baby DLs to adult DLs?

I hope you can understand what I'm trying to say!

Hi Sabrina! I read the AHS definition and never knew that about the bracts. You learn something new every day! I can say that some daylilies can take a long time to reach their full potential in terms of branching. I've had one cultivar for about 8 years and very slowly the branching & bud count has increased. I've gone from 2-way with 5 buds to 5-way with 13 buds in this time. It probably took this long because I only started regularly watering & fertilizing my daylilies in 2013.

I think I have bracts on these scapes.

It really surprised me, so I was so excited about blooming season. But it's cold and rainy, poor sun and blooms open slowly and really whashed out.
Elena, I just started this spring with regular fertilizing and watering (before 25 may it didn't rain). I used a slow release fertilizer and a iron chelate. I can see a big difference this year, but I don't know if it's just because of the plants getting stronger for their age or for the little care I gave to them. I see thicker scapes too.

Sabrina, keep up with watering & fertilizing and you'll see the difference it makes! This year I have some of the largest fans I've ever seen on some of my oldest cultivars. I've only got one blooming right now so I don't know about bud counts but scapes are sturdier too.
