I have very sandy soil, i believe zero nutrients.

I bought something last year, maybe something with humus?? can't recall.
But I think I really need to improve the soil that i have ... i think many of mine may be struggling... though some seem to be doing just fine....
and I lost 2 last year... never lost a hosta before.

Very nice groupings Paul

In the first picture I love the weeping green maple and the way everything compliments each other, especially the coral bells and the scattered rocks.
The second picture is my favorite 'Liberty', very beautiful.
The third picture with the red maple what is the hosta to the left of the maple. I think you showed me a pic when it was a baby and I was like Drooling and still am. Lovey dubby

Some of the best advise I got on growing hosta was from a hybridizer in North Carolina. I have followed much of his advise on his website and last year even the hosta I thought were dead thrived. My error was in fertilizing and watering https://www.hostahosta.com/

I have done a lot of research and have a lot of information on hosta and shade plants but I just don't have the designer eye when it comes to planting my beds. The pix are great!

I agree I tried watering everyday when the pips appear until they leaf out and they actually swell like a balloon and get huge. A good friend of mine who use to order the perennials for a local nursery told me if I wanted my huge hosta to get huge I should stop dividing them and to never divide them the first year. Last year was a very rainy season for us. I really think now that I stopped dividing along with the much needed water and fertilizer it did the trick. I had the best hosta ever last year.
