@Dave, it looks more like K. x houghtonii with those thin leaves that don't have a lip where they meet the petiole.

I have a problem with the many suggestions to move various images to the entry for Kalanchoe x houghtonii. The fact is that this entry does not even belong in our database because it's not a valid botanical name. The hybrid taxa that are included in the major taxonomic databases and our database are hybrids that occur spontaneously, in the wild. This name was added to our database in error because Kalanchoe x houghtonii is a man-made hybrid of K. daigremontiana and K. delagoensis and therefore is not a taxonomically acknowledged hybrid taxon. The synonym included in our present entry, Bryophyllum x houghtonii, is not included in the taxonomic databases as an accepted name or synonym either.

Mother of Thousands (Kalanchoe 'Houghtonii')

The only solution I can see is to rename this entry to show Houghtonii as the cultivar name, with Kalanchoe x houghtonii and Bryophyllum x houghtonii listed as also-sold-as names.

TY so much for your help! Any help sorting the entries would be awesome! Clearly all of the plants at the K. daigremontiana entry are not the same plant. Whatever you need to do to make the name correct for K. x h, please do!

K. daigremontiana is a catch-all, not just here, universally wherever plants are discussed in English. I see all kinds of Kalanchoes ID'd as that species in various places. The few reliable pics I've been able to find, such as the one I added from RHS, show that species as having a leaf about half as wide as it is long, distinctly folded in the middle, with a lip where leaf body meets petiole, distinct mottling on leaf reverse, hardly any distance between nodes. I have 20 diff Kalanchoes, but all have been ID'd as something else.

I was just reading an article about Kalanchoes earlier. I'm sure you, and others, can make much more sense of it, and it mentions a few I don't have.

I've edited the name of the Kalanchoe x houghtonii entry and added the parentage information in the data field. I'm afraid I can't help you identify the various K. daigremontiana images because I don't know enough about Kalanchoes to do that.

TY so much!

By "you," I meant to include you specifically, and address anyone reading who might have something to share in the alluring first person tense that would make a response feel oh-so natural. ;)

I admit to being confused though. What has changed since the entry was made? I've read nothing except that it's a hybrid of K. daigremontiana and K. delagoensis.

On pg. 3, this manuscript claims Mr. Houghton observed the hybrid, not that he created it.

At the RHS article I pasted, they use K. x houghtonii.

Nothing has changed since the entry was made. It was proposed in error and approved in error. It never belonged in the database as K. x houghtonii. There have been times when we've approved new plant proposals only on the strength of the plant's inclusion in The Plant List, even if only with "unresolved" status, as in the case of this plant, but a plant can't remain unresolved forever. If no other taxonomic database includes it after a few years, it's not a valid name.

Your first link didn't work for me. The second one did, but it's dated 2008 and lists the plant as a "self-sustaining hybrid." The fact that it still hasn't been added to the taxonomic databases as an accepted hybrid taxon in the past 8 years is an indication that it failed to meet the criteria of a hybrid occurring spontaneously in the wild. I didn't look at the rest of the links, but it's enough for me that the plant is not listed as an accepted name in the Catalogue of Life, The Plant List, ITIS, or GRIN.

Thanks for your reply!

Hopefully someone will be able to give this extremely prevalent plant a name sometime soon in a more official capacity. Everyone seems to be using it already.

My only dog in this race is to try to bring attention to the fact that an entry has pics of several different plants, and offer whatever input I can for discussing what they might be - by whatever names those who decide plant names have decided.

Another version of the first link, an article published in March of this year.

By starting this discussion, I'd originally hoped to discuss possibly moving the pic to the Kalanchoe parent entry or to be able to investigate further. I'd suggested houghtonii for comparison if the plant is still around to continue an investigation.
