Oh, I like sports OK. My prettiest, biggest coleus is a sport. When I said I skipped those I just meant I didn't add them to the database.

One that I don't like as much this year is Cracklin' Rosie. The original colors last year were so bright and colorful. This year it's mutated to a rather dull one. The original was much prettier.

Here's Rosie last September (with one stem of Katie fighting for camera coverage).

Here's Rosie this August, same spot in the garden. Notice the pretty bright colors have become muted. The bright green has almost disappeared.

The cutting was from momma. It just mutated slowly over a period of two years. I have to say though, the photographer didn't (me) didn't get a very good shot in photo #2 above. Anyway, I didn't keep a cutting of it this year. Maybe I'll buy a new one next year.

Another oddball that I have is Tilt-a-Whirl. The one I got last year doesn't even resemble other photos I see of it. I'm pretty sure I bought it from RD last year, (but maybe not) and I wonder if they sent me a wrong plant? This is it last year- to the right of Stormy Weather.
Thumb of 2011-10-01/kqcrna/b6d3c7

It developed a sport last summer- one red stem- and I kept a cutting of it too. Fast forward to this year. Here you can see the red sport in the dead center of the picture.
That red sport has become my biggest, strongest, brightest, favorite coleus, over 36" tall.
Thumb of 2011-10-01/kqcrna/35fb3d

Here you see the big red sport dwarfing Momma, which is half it's size, to the right and front of it.

So, yeah, I like sports!

wow is that one great.. my tilt a whirl didn't do well overwintering either.. I had one that I tried to do a standard with.. ended up really ugly and was full of mealy bugs the next summer.. I just let them go... oh that cutie little shiny shoes standard I bought in spring.. ended up really nice and when the hurricane came I put it next to the chimney on the ground.. boy did it get beat up.. to the point I just took cuttings and going to let it go as well ... really thought that spot was sheltered enough.. guess not

You can see though, that my original tilt-a-whirl doesn't look like tilt-a-whirl at all. Does anyone recognize it? Can you give me an ID on it?

Yes, Allison, I think yours and mine are the same. I don't think it's KK- ours have more red and yellow. Similar leaf size and shape, but different colors than KK. I've grown it and more sun and less sun, colors haven't been the same as KK I don't think. Confused

Yes, that's it! (I still don't know where I got it for sure- Rosy Dawn or locally. But since the names are so similar, I can see how the grower confused them). Thanks, Allison.

I figured out mine came from Agway in 2008... after being infested with mealies.. I let it go.. but wow what a nice tall monster of a coleus it was.. might have to send me a cutting next year if you still have it
