Nice crosses James thanks for sharing. I hope you get plenty of pods loaded with seeds.

Thanks for the info Glen, you are right. that's why now I remove the stamens on any I don't plan on using for pollen before I go to work at 6:30. the antlers are bare up until around 7:30-10am then the pollen starts forming. I wish I would have done this at the beginning but you live and you learn. One can still hope though Smiling

today's crosses are as followed:

Sorry to be late to the party. Like most of you can relate I feel like the it's time to make the doughnuts guy. "It's time to cross the daylilies." ; "I crossed the daylilies". I too have put aa lot of focus on implementing my seedlings into my outcrossing programs as well as a lot of backcrosses. This year I've found that all the planning I did over the Winter work for about 45 minutes, before I adapt to what's out blooming. Here are just a few of the ones I have gotten hits and pod sets on.

Will post more tomorrow. It's time to make the doughnuts.
Maybe I shouldn't post when I'm exhausted. Got a number wrong and a pollen parent wrong and had to do an edit. 50% correct that's super good right?

Rolling on the floor laughing I used that line in class once and my middle school students looked at me like I had three heads! I had to go to the Internet and find the commercial to show them it. That lead to looking at other old commercials like I'm a pepper, where's the beef, and my bologna has a first name. Their exit pass was naming a current commercial that stuck with them. Not the lesson planned that day but a fun learning experience. Later that month when we had a lot of repeat practice to do, one of the boys asked, Is it time to make the donuts? Hilarious!
Love what you teach and teach what you love!

These daylilies are kicking my butt. On the plus side I've got my son and his fiancée to start working a few lines. Now that peak season is over but hey all take all the help I can get. I'm hoping it will have that God Father "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in" effect on the kids. Here's some more crosses that have set pods. Had lots of RFK babies to play with this year and was quit surprised how different most of them were from even the others out of the same pod.

*Blush* My crosses look sad compared to everybody else's. I can't wait until next year when my seedlings will start blooming so I'll have more genetics to play with in my hybridizing attempts.
Tommy @needrain helped me determine that my Avant Garde wasn't Avant Garde but instead was Avante Grade now I have 2 pods forming on it since I found out it was a tet. its a unique flower that sometimes looks plastic in the garden I can't wait to see what it's offspring will look like.

Thanks so much Becky, I've been meaning to get on and complement you and everyone else on their seedlings. I really like your unusual forms, and the Drink the Light x God Save the Queen baby is gorgeous!! JWWC, love your patterns and let us know if you register your "expect Grace" seedling. I got a ta da spot already picked out, and close enough to keep my walking down. Doing this hybridizing thing with a prosthetic leg has proven to be a bugger some days when your sure you've walked a mile or two just dabbing pollen and tagging.

Daniel I think you're on the right track and it's awesome you're getting help from Cindy and others. I gotta say I really do like your N. Tiger Eye X Mineral Springs seedling a lot. If it opens flat and the color holds it will probably be a good breeder. And the first bloom is always blah and that one looks good. I'll be shipping you new seed out either tomorrow or Friday. I'll check and see if I have a seedling or two potted that may fit what your going for too. I saw where you were interested in patterns. Tets and dips? The plus side of being just a few years in, you can narrow your objectives like all the breeders talk about and not suffer from what Oscie Whatley called Filo (Falling in Love Obsession). That way you don't have to worry about checking tags and going what in the world was I thinking with the Keys to the Kingdom X Christopher Moody cross. I am gonna plant those in the first wave just in case the AHS ever adds a new Quasimodo award category.

Amber, I saw you're wanting to add some variety and like using God Save the Queen a lot. I'm sure I have some seed that will fit the bill. My green house got converted back to something called a bedroom when my son had to move home for the end of Winter into Spring. I probably have some Lambertson, DeVito, Emmerich crosses that would fit the bill for helping build a blue/pattern/toothy line. No cost if your interested. I do sell seed, but only current year ones. These seeds are perfectly viable though and should still give you a good germination rate. I kinda think of the seeds in a corny way as my babies and if you or anyone else starting out wants to get a little jump start, message me and I'll try to help you out. I didn't foresee the losing my grow room thing and would rather help a passionate newbie out than waste perfectly good seed I actually put quit a bit of effort into. Anyway happy hybridizing everyone and thanks for sharing your seedlings. I love looking and seeing a bit of where other hybridizers passions are.

Final question. I know they have a classified section on here for sales, but what I was wondering is, besides the trade button if you post a pic in the data base; is there a method for hooking up for trading on here? I'm gonna be dividing after harvesting pods and, was thinking I probably have some daylilies people might be interested in for breeding and vice versa, and hey it saves having to make room in the sale field and saves money too. Actually that last part is probably not true. I'm sure even if I do some trading I'll find a way to spend way too much on a season end buying frenzy anyway. If there is such a place, I'd be interested to know where I need to go, or if anyone would be interested in doing any swapping let me know and I'll make a list of what I think I'll have. I'm rust free as of today and haven't really seen any leaf miner issues to speak of either. Started spraying this week as a preventative measure. Thanks again for this post Daniel. It's been fun to see everyone's work and I hope to see more.

Tommy this site is full of great people, you have been so kind to me and other members I hope someday I can help others the way I was helped. Thank you so much for sharing your seeds with me and as always if I get anything that you like out of them you are more than welcome to first divisions. As far as a place to trade plants Why don't you start a thread for trading daylilies here http://garden.org/forums/view/... I'm sure many people will jump on the chance to swap daylilies with you.
I got my very first seeds today from my own cross Lavender Blush (a dip)X Forestlake Ragamuffin (a tet). Some say it's more than likely just Lavender Blush x Lavender Blush but I hope the cross took. I have 2 more pods on Lavender Blush with tet pollen parents that I waiting to ripen.

Following the advice of Hemlady I'm leaving them out to dry for 3 days prior to putting them in the fridge, I sure hope they germinate. Only 2 look healthy enough to do anything but I'm still going to try them all Crossing Fingers!

I don't know why FOA does this. Mine is blooming now but most of my scapes blasted (drought) so I'm only going to have a few flowers. I'm not sure if it is even worth it to try and set pods on it. I've got several cultivars like this that I should probably just give up on using for hybridizing.

@tommy71 That is incredibly generous of you and I would be more than happy to take you up on that offer! I love some of the seedlings you are using in your breeding program! Out of curiosity, what is your criteria for registering a daylily? Also, I see that you are only a couple hours from me and I do sometimes head your direction for ball tournaments with my kiddos...do you happen to allow garden visitors?

This is a diploid cross where the pods have matured and seeds collected. It was planned to be the only cross I was going to do this season. Rolling on the floor laughing

Then 'Aldersgate' started blooming and more diploid pods:

I used 'Lillian's Vapor Trail' so much year before last and have so many seedlings I want to see bloom I wasn't going to use it, but in the end I couldn't resist:

I really, really was going to stop there, but 'Liquid Memory' was doing so well:

So I still didn't quit Smiling . Lately I've been trying pollen from 'Banshee Love Call'. We'll see. I'll do a post later on the tetraploid pods.

You're welcome Daniel. Sorry about the aborted pods. Unfortunately that happens. Here in Missouri it's been a banner year for that. At least in my garden. I'm always up for garden visitors Amber and I didn't realize we were so close. Actually if you do stop in for a visit you can do a two garden tour if you wish. The jnabloomers garden next door belongs to my cousin April and here boyfriend Nick. They are actually a bit further along then I am in a lot of ways. I swear, if you show someone how to dab some pollen they shouldn't be allowed to rocket past you. lol. We actually pool resources together every year and kind of work things in a symbiotic way. I had a tiller issue last Fall and the last two orders I placed last year had to be saved over at their place.

As far as registration here's a link to the AHS registration instructions. http://www.daylilies.org/Dayli... I have been holding off on registration trying to make sure I had some lines developed and headed in the direction I wanted, so this year will be my first year submitting myself. As far as evaluation I kind of take the approach of 1. Is the flower unique in some way 2. Is it an improvement of either of the parent plants. I know a lot of this is basically honor system evaluation but want to do this the right way since I plan on doing this for life.

I was looking through your pics. I think you have a good core started and have put thought into your parent plants. I'm trying to discipline myself more and not add too many ones that don't really fit the breeding lines just because I love the pretty flowers. I'll shoot you a message about directions and will get hold of my son to see if he has our website up and running yet. I'm pretty easy to find though, and have a sign out by the highway. I look forward to a visit sometime. It's always nice to talk to addicts like myself who "get it".

Daniel, I'll know better after this bloom season. Last year Malihini gave me the same problem. It hasn't bloomed yet this year. Also Smoky Mountain Autumn although I wonder if I have the correct plant. Ruby Claret was a problem but it looks like it might be pollen fertile this year. Siloam Mama seems to be pod fertile this year. There are a few others but I can't remember off the top of my head. But for all I won't know for sure until the pods mature and I actually get seeds (or not).
