Hello.

I am new here and a little lost. I live in VA but I don't have a "garden". I have a small 2 acre patch of disturbed woodland/meadow and I am trying to restore this on a budget so I am using and looking for some maybe not-so-conventional methods. I couldn't really find a forum here where I fit in...I am a vegetarian and I fully believe in "to each their own" but it seems wherever I go I run into discussions about cutting up animals

I was bitten by a copperhead last yr but I didn't kill or feel the need to kill the snake...you kill a snake and it's only going to be replaced by another...AND snakes are as much a part of the ecosystem as monarchs, though people generally don't feel threatened by butterflies...I understand that...I just can't seem to fit in anywhere...anyone else feel the same...even if for other reasons....you just don't fit in?

Looking through the site, I would suggest maybe the Permaculture OR Vegetables and Fruit forum (I have not reviewed the threads but hopefully that would be more in line with your ideas?)
I have been on the site for a month or so and found that most of the conversations go pretty well based on the subject matter (and then again some go way of subject) - kind of like life :(

Anyway, I hope that you can find yourself here, being on the site, researching and giving advice.

Hi Plantmania and Gingin! for the welcomes! Maybe I'll check out permaculture...while I like to eat fruits and veggies...I don't grow any, other than the odd pumpkin that shows up in my compost patch as a result of my kids carving their pumpkins the yr before Just too many hungry critters around here...too much competition for food!

Why don't you start a thread about gardening on a budget?
Or a thread restoring a woodland, etc? If you can't find what you are looking for - create it. There may already be one similiar -- you may want to check first

I'd like to see vegetarian recipes too, but all together in one place rather then wade through a bunch of stuff....although I'm not a vegetarian this time of year I'd rather eat veggies and fruit instead of meat.

Moon: I will check out those links...they do sound interesting! My main goal right now is to "reroute" the deer from their paths by eliminating their trails...very difficult but not impossible....and yes, deer hunting is not an option for me! I have grown shrubs, trees and perennials from seed and occasionally buy rooted cuttings on ebay....witch hazel, dogwood, leucothoe etc VERY very difficult to hide from deer and the deer around here do not read the memos about which species taste bad or are toxic to them! I've even found blue cohosh chewed on...a "weed" around here as it generally is not eaten by anything in its right mind

I think my main problem is that I'm not sure WHICH forum to post in...you see, I used to, years ago visit gardenweb which I think has become something else now and they had a woodland forum where there were some people doing similar things with their wooded property but I can't really find anywhere here. I actually don't really cook very much I eat a LOT of salads Funnily enough my husband, who is a dyed in the wool meat eater, cooks the greatest wheat pilaf and sphagetti sauce for my youngest (veggie) daughter! Hey, I noticed you are in Hillsborough! I am actually in the WNC mountains right now and I spent a couple of my college years in Raleigh....LOVE NC!

Gingin: Thanks for the suggestion! I don't cook an awful lot but I agree summers are for fresh fruits and veggies

Isn't it funny ...the deer won't touch those three here for diet -- BUT --- they will rub om dogwood and witch hazel and break.

Another forum you may enjoy is the Mid-Atlantic Gardening forum. There are folks from Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and parts of NY, NJ and NC. You may just find folks working on areas very much like yours.

@whereami, the midatlantic forum is a very diverse group, some with woodland conditions similar to yours. There are hunters and meat eaters in the group as well as animal lovers. Quite a few of us are really into gardening for birds, bees, and butterflies. Come say hi! We get together at least three times a year to swap plants and party.
