hi

im back with the same problem as last year. this happened to some of my regale last year and looks like striking some this year.

pictured are 'forever susan' my earliest lilies, as you can see the buds are twisted and opening wrong. these will not flower properly... anyone know what this problem is? last year these thrived, they are poor this year Sad

How did this go, Rob? I had some similar issues with some Asiatics and LA cultivars this year. Extra petals were common as well. Both with new (from autumn planting) and established bulbs, but it only affected the first few buds, later opened well. We did have an unusual warm May and part of June and we were also very, very dry and sunny, followed by cold wet weather. I'm inclined to blame the weather, and I do wonder if watering more during the drought would have helped my lilies or not.

None of the later types seems affected so far and I also have no damage to the spring planted Asiatics, but the first of them have just started to bloom anyway, so perhaps escaped the worst of the weather effects or they are simply not susceptible OR perhaps the damage happened earlier in spring or winter. In any case an unusual year with regards to bloom/bud shape for me as well. Not true lilies, but I also had more problems with day lilies opening wrong than I ever had before, so really think it has to do with weather and that these things are connected.

the damaged buds failed, others though were ok, so im not inclined to blame the weather as it only effected some buds. less then 10% in total were effected.

They like lots of rain and cooler temps when they are first developing, I am inclined to think it is weather. Now that I am in a really bad climate the heat waves really cause a lot of problems, at best most first year planted lilies abort.
