Pickle Barrel House is a "tourist/historic" site in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They have a rotating iris bed at the site, but keep a "farm" of varieties to select from. Excess gets sold to support the all volunteer facility upkeep. Since the 2 ladies who care for the garden like historic irises and the theme is a historic one there are many historic irises on their sales list.

thank you dave for the hips iris sale post, and to sherry for clarification of hips... i finally figured out a "duh" moment before i read your post sherry on what the acronymn stood for.

i love to look at all that i might order, but in reality have to put a check to that impulse, unless i want to throw out the rest of my garden to start over again with mostly irises (when we moved her 10 yr. ago, i planted two variegated irises, by the end of the year, they shriveled and disappeared. after that experience i was reluctant to try more because of the zone requirements). if all goes well, i might try a year-end sale of joe ghio's. for now, i have to be content and not crowd my small space w/too many iris cultivars Sighing!

i had a late start to the iris order, because a friend who lives ins santa cruz is coming for a visit and she's the instigator, who asked if i might like to try some of her iris surplus. Lovey dubby this started my quest for more ( cuz ya can't just have one?!). she may know sherry?

i will let y'all know how my four for now are faring, and will post more with photos when my other box from '"nola's" arrives. it may not be until september?

i planted the four i did rec'v. from shreiner s, in the ground w/out soaking roots. i only read about that tip, after i had planted all directly in the ground. most of my soil is quite sandy, and i will have to see in the next grwoing season if i have to amend the soil?

i might try a few in pots as well, to see which ones have the best fighting chance for flowers and growth.

If the soil is really sandy make sure they get a good watering every other day or so until the roots are established. The sandy soil drains so much better, so more water will be needed.

And because sandy soil drains so much better there is less chance of rot as when soil is clay-like holding lots of moisture!

I constrained myself and only ordered 6 from the PBH [Pickle Barrel House] sale.

Daphne, you might want to try one of the smaller irises too like an SDB. They take a little more stress before they pitch a fit.

His restraint wasn't as good as mine, though (at least as far as the Pickle Barrel sale), I only ordered 5 !!! Of course , due to trading, begging, and whining , I fully expect to see almost a dozen more in the box, when it arrives Sticking tongue out !
