These are all self-seeded! They certainly know exactly where to place themselves.
Every year the martagon lilies are more spectacular than the previous!

You mention that these are self-seeded - may I ask what you started off with?

A friend took the previous photo of my self-seeded martagons in the spot where she saw the greatest concentration, but I have many more scattered through much of my shade garden. They seem to like to appear in paths so I have many little "fences" to protect them... dangerous to walk in places!
I hadn't really thought about the variation of the plants in this one small section of my shade garden but Rick is absolutely correct.

To respond to Joshua, I have 17 named cultivars in long established clumps. Dalhansonii may be a parent of the red seedlings, and Brotsing may be the parent of the yellow ones, but this is conjecture on my part. I didn't know I had a seedling until the first one bloomed in 2013 and that one looks like dalhansonii which is located about 30 ft. away.
I purchased 17 more cultivars in 2012 and 2013, but those are just now starting to bloom... several never came up at all. Martagons require a lot of patience and sometimes bring disappointment, but are well worth the wait. But nothing has been so rewarding as these self-seeded plants. Mother Nature must have decided that I deserved something special?

They are just gorgeous! I planted a bunch of them on this property maybe 7-8 years ago and not a one has ever shown up. The grow wild up in my home town area but the only time I have ever spotted them is along some of the rural fence rows that have the woods encroaching upon them. If I can manage it this fall I am going to order some more and plant them in my new home. I think I have the perfect spot for them.

Self seeded martagons? Wow. Your established martagons in the wooded area are lovely. So many shades of color. Congratulations.

Your Martagons are all fantastic Linda and you are right to say that they require patience! I am eagerly waiting for mine to bloom. Your conditions must be perfect for them to self-seed; I hope to have that happen in my garden someday! Congratulations and keep posting your beautiful pictures.
