What an exciting start to your dahlia blooming season, Geof! I really like your Veronne's Morning Star. What a beautiful flower and a very apt name!

After returning from Houston, tx was rather disappointed to see that the dahlias were not amping up as they usually do. Not going to be a good year from what I can see. Hot weather has exacerbated the wimpiness of the plants. Some will make it though. They always do.

It's not just you, Mary. Dan and I have been talking about some that just haven't shown much growth. Some are fine but few are as big as I'd have thought they'd be.

I agree. Things are starting slow. I have seen buds on only a couple. For some reason, most remain rather short.

What's up with all the short plants this year? Sounds like it's not just mine. I have some that are branched out as wide as a basketball but are no more than 10-12" tall.

I still have a lot of short ones too - but its still June. I used to never get blooms at all until mid July and that was the small ones. When I look at my notes from last year, even the BB's didn't start opening until mid July. My first AA bloom was July 22nd.

I started my tubers a bit earlier, and then planted them about a week earlier than normal, and we have also had an enormous amount of rain and a warmer June than normal.

The rain has also brought the insects out in swarms. I have more bug damage than I remember having. You gatt a take the bad with the good. Shrug!

Wow, that River's Novelty is so awesome!!

So planting my dahlias on 4/15 didn't produce super early blooms. My first bloom came last week and a second plant bloomed a few days ago. Oddly enough, and I hope I'm not jinxing myself here, but the JBs haven't attacked them yet. JBs are hitting some other things pretty heavy so I know they're out there. I was really happy none of them rotted with that 3 week stretch of cool, damp weather in May.

Good to see you back on the forum, Mary. I hope you heal without needing surgery. Easy with the digging! I have you on my prayer list.

Great blooms, Geof!
