I collected the seed for this Prickly Pear in the fall of 2014. The parent plant was about 4 feet wide and 1.5 feet tall and had spines that were wicked. I managed to get a seedpod (spent the next half hour pulling spines out of my fingers) with a couple seeds still in it and took them home. What I failed to do was take a photo - probably because it was getting dark and starting to snow and I had left my jacket in the car. It was growing on a Community College campus in the hills above Carson City, NV so I know its cold hardy.
Two seeds sprouted in the spring of 2015. They were odd little things, both had a small "twin" cotyledon attached to the stem of the larger cotyledon. I put them outside about half way through last summer. They were only a couple inches long and had grown into a larger twin and smaller twin, but no pads, looking more like twin cigars than Prickly Pears.
Now, almost 1 year later, pads are starting to form. I can't wait to see what color they bloom. Anyone have any thoughts on an ID?
