Thread OP

Hello,
I think both photos posted by skylark are not P. mamei, but P. plowmanii. I have both as live specimens. Mamei's foliage is more like the first photo by robertduval14: veins are closer together, silver freckles are small. The plant is entirely green. Plowmanii has really pronounced pink coloration and ruffles on the petiole, just like I'm seeing in the closeup by skylark. The veins are also farther apart and silver coloring on the front of the leaf is more subdued and "splash"-like rather than little freckles.

I could be wrong, but saw these photos on the front page and it stuck out to me!

LariAnn Garner in this article said that P. plownamii lacked the marbled speckles though, but the petiole IS serrated.

i increased the magnification on photo to see the leaf better. What do you think?

of course, the petiole wins, if it's clearly unique! so then we can move the pics to P.plowmanii.
But perhaps, somebody else can comment on this to confirm?

But we actually do not have Philo plowmanii in DB!
i found this pic of P.mamei on hawaiian bot garden site - the variegation is not as dotty, but more in longish strips similar to the one on my pic.

and i do have pics of P. plowmanii too (inflo, serration red-veining ..the whole 9 yards). didn't post them 'cause we don't have P. plowmanii for some reason. It looks different, no sliver marbling, serrated petioles, venation quite different too. i'll go put in a proposal, we what they say Smiling

i googled P. plowmanii more and it's not on PlantList and it's not on IAS list either - so, they'll reject the proposal...
however, P splitgerberi is on the list and i have good pics of that one - and it looks very close to P.plowmanii! it just gets hairier...
however, LariAnn DID mention P. plowmanii - so it's possible they renamed it to smth else???!
Well, Evan will let us know soon Whistling

I have approved skylark's proposal to add P. plowmanii, but with reservations. It's not listed in any taxonomic database but The Plant List, and even TPL says its status is "unresolved." This means that it's probably an invalid name. At some point, the entry probably will be renamed to reflect the accepted name of the plant.
