I was out this morning checking for frost and saw a humming bird on the salvia.
It seems rather late in the season and getting cold , should it not be moving south by now?

Hi Cinda,

I'm sure that little Hummingbird was on his way south, just stopping along the way to fuel up!

I'm seeing far less in Cincinnati, but I still do have some. I have lots of salvia in bloom, and an agastache, zinnias, impatiens, so quite a few that they like. They're still feeding from the feeder, too.

Wow! We won't have our first frost until sometime in December or January ... if we have one. The last two winters were extremely cold here in Florida. We had numerous freezes and many nights with temp's in the 20's!! I sure hope it doesn't get that cold this winter! I'm sure the Hummer is okay ... this is the time of year where they begin heading south ... your little one may have just been lagging behind a bit and fueling up for the journey.

To get back to Monarchs, I found one on the street this morning. It couldn't fly, just kind of hopping around. Poor thing! Almost all of one wing was gone. I put it into a container with cut flowers in there, in hopes that after it rests and nectars, it'll be okay. Not likely, but you never know!

Linda, you have a kind heart. Lovey dubby I would have done the same thing. I hope that Monarch survives but at least you know you did the best you could. Butterflies sometimes have a hard time when they are under attack by other B'flies, lizards, birds or whatever. I took this photo last summer of a Gulf fritillary with a chewed up wing. He seemed to be okay even with that huge chunk out of his wing and I actually saw him feeding on the Echinacea's for a few days.

Sad I was moving my plants out on the deck today, rotating some to more light. I was moving a large pot that's on a wheeled caddy and apparently there was a tiny lizard underneath the tray or something. It must have jumped off the pot/tray as I was moving it and one of the wheels ran over the baby. I picked the itty bitty thing up, petted it and told it I was so sorry. It was still moving so I laid it at the base of another plant on top of the bark mulch but I checked later and it was not alive, so I buried it beneath the plant. Crying

Aw, poor thing! All we've got left are the a few of the little lizards that must have hatched this year. The bigger ones must have been killed off during the summer.
