A neighbor gave me this and called it Hen and Chicks, but elsewhere it was suggested NOT. So what is it actually? Instead of staying short and compact it gets long leggy stems.

Hi Ginger. Beautiful Ghost Plant you have there. One of my favorites. It should make it outdoors during winter in your area. What are your low temps during winter?
Mine has survived winters into the teens, but does loose much of it's petals. It regrows once weather warms. I will give it a more protected spot this winter.

Thanks, Lynn We get to the teens at times...also hard freezes...usually not for too long. In the past it has wintered in the GH, but might try leaving some out this year.

Good to have the main plant in the greenhouse for insurance. : )

Hi All, I have been looking and reading, trying to learn what is what. My Aunt gave me what she called Hens & Chicks. I was living in Indiana at the time. Lost them all. What I would like to know is, I live in Tucson AZ. Can I grow them here? And if so what should I know. I do have a small greenhouse and a small yard(very small) LOL So all my plants are in pots. I have a nice size patio with shard . I know there is a lot more then H & C. I started to read your Sempervivum & Jovibarba forum but so much to read that its going to take me to next fall. lol I haven't seen any body from AZ on. So can't get any Ideas on what to do. Please help. I have ordered from MCG Got some wonderful plants. But till I find out if I can grow them wont order any more. Thanks for any help you can give me. Mary

Ginger, both your Aloe and Kalanchoe plants are considered tender succulents. Here is a thread to read more about them and share your photos. Please post the photo of your awesome

Hen and chicks are Sempervivum, of which there are maybe 6000 cultivars. That is why we need to be careful about keeping each one in our collections accurately tagged, unless you just want to grow them for fun. They are winter hardy and actually need some kind of winter like conditions to thrive. http://garden.org/plants/brows...
If you don't have a winter (freezing temps), then you could grow the tender succulents of which there are many thousands to choose from. The thread "Tender Succulents Chat and Photos" in Cactus and Succulents forum
Your patio sounds like the perfect place to grow the tender succlents (not frost hardy). Thanks Lynn, My camera isn't working right now. But as soon as I can will take pictures. I am in a bit of a terminal right now. Just had eye surgery (right eye) having my family coming in on the 17th for a week and the next week my left eye. But then I am done (I hope) lol So can get back to my main love , my hen & chicks. But will try to still keep up with you guys. There is so much knowledge here. I so want to learn and hope to be able to grow my baby's here in AZ.
