They have a really nice selection this year:

http://www.sw-greenhouse.com/M...

I bought roses from them a couple of years ago and was really disappointed with two of them, which refused to grow nicely and look sick to this day. The rest of the roses from S&W behaved well, but because of those two, I was wary and didn't order anything last year.

I ran across my 2010 invoice from them a few days ago and noticed that the two sickly roses were the only own-root ones in the bunch. That explained a lot. I have no reason why a nursery that sells grafted roses would suddenly send own-root Spellbound and Lady Bird bushes out to their customers. Those are two roses that benefit greatly from grafting.

This year the only own-root roses they have are minis and shrubs, which is as it should be. Smiling

Are you confusing "bare root" with "own root"? Here are the own-root rose pages. Blue Girl isn't there.

Yes, I'm being a moron and was mistaking own root for bare root. Mind you, I'd been up for about 20 hours, driving 200 miles up & down mountains, fought I25 traffic for 2 hours, and had walked 2 miles through thousands of people at a local (well, 74 miles away) festival. I was uber tired when I looked at that.

I need to see if I can find a crazy/stupid icon for Dave to put on the list just for me when I do dumbdumb things.. which would be all the time!!

Zuzu,
Thanks for the heads-up. There are a few roses there that have been on my long list for quite some time, and it's good to find a new (to me, anyway) supplier who does a good job. I'm thinking I might buy a couple roses from them.

Am I right in assuming that their bare root roses are probably all grown by someone else like J&P, Weeks, Star, or Otto & Son? Is there any way of guessing which roses come from which supplier? IYO, does it matter much? Finally, could it be that when their inventory says "18 available for 2011 shipping" they mean "... for 2012 shipping?"

Toni, it's an easy mistake to make, I do it too, sometimes. And without such a good excuse.

Toni, maybe that could be the hidden meaning of your question mark minibadge.

Steve, you're doing okay. I looked at those pages a dozen times and never noticed the 2011.

I suppose you could call them and ask who their suppliers are. I think they might have dropped J&P (the way so many of the rest of us have) because they were offering some new J&P roses last year and I don't see any on their site this year.

The language on their warrantee page is a little scary. Warranteed for six weeks - that's half the time it will take for them to leaf out here. And if they fail for any reason that includes weather or failure to care for the rose perfectly, well, IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT. (It's a reasonable position for any company that ships at the right time for your area; but they don't.) In essence, if you order the rose they get the money and you get what you get.

On the other hand, their prices are low in comparison to most places. And if the roses arrive in good condition they could be a good deal.

I needed a big red HT for the back of a border, so I ordered Liebeszauber.
DW's favorite rose is Double Delight, so I thought I'd try that again.
I cannot resist the look of a perfectly grown blossom of Helmut Schmidt, so that's on the list.
I love the look of the bright blossoms of Oranges 'n' Lemons against dark new foliage, so ditto.
Been meaning to buy Gingersnap for some time and, well, you know.
Rainbow Sorbet has been a trouper in my garden, so I got two more.
Barbara Streisand, Cary Grant, and Judy Garland are in the order - probably have to place each on a different stage.

If anyone wants a wonderful red-orange rose, they carry Picante. I highly recommend this rose. Not fussy about anything, takes my winters like a champ, long vase life.. but no scent. Sad But still, a beautiful rose!
