Thread OP

for the last 5 years, a small hole 1.5 inches across appear in the same place every year in almost in the exact middle of my lawn.

I never see what is causing this. rat poison is not effective, rat traps don't work. on some occasions it appears to cover the hole with fresh earth. i have dug down 2 foot where the hole then shoots off in one direction. the hole was filled with rat poison where i have returned to see it has been tossed out! i have now fill it in and place a concrete slab over - it has now appeared to one side of the slab! after 2 weeks the hole has now been camouflaged with broken earth

We live next to a farmed crop field we have a very small problem with a mole on the odd occassion

any help in identifying what this is would be fanastic

Welcome! If you're in north-eastern North America my guess would be either chipmunks or voles. You could try a humane live trap baited with peanut butter on a cracker near the hole. Possible culprits may be different if you live elsewhere.

A mole? Do you have mole runs near the opening? Mole runs are 4 to 6 inches wide of disturbed slightly raised earth. Their length can be a foot long to many feet. When you step on them the ground goes back to normal. If you have moles you will have voles, too. Voles use the mole runs.

Is whatever is creating the hole causing damage to anything? Unless you think it might be a poisonous snake of some kind, I personally wouldn't worry about it unless some desirable plant(s) are being eaten. (I'd rather have that small hole - and the critter - in my yard than a cement slab... Shrug! )
