I'm hoping someone can ID this tree. It's in Smuggler's Notch in Vermont. It grows at a spot special to my brother in law, who just died tragically, and I'd like to create a piece of art that incorporates it. Thank you in advance!

Or a Beech.

It's a Yellow birch - Betula alleghaniensis. Exposed root systems in the wild are common with this species.
Beech have smooth bark throughout and leaves without basal lobes.
edited for correction to add the "out" in without. Yellow birch with lobes, beech without.

I've never met either in person so what do I know?
