Natalie said:Good to know about mud! I don't like mud, at least not as a color for blooms! Hilarious! Love playing in the stuff though!

I might try Spanish Glow with it, just to see what happens.

I grow Spanish Glow but it has not so much diamond dust. I was wondering why it's called like that. Tomorrow I will check it again.

There's a lot of it in Awakening Spirit as you can see here

and in Taffetà Mist

I don't think they're right for your project but I'm not expert at all.
Regarding your questions about diamond dust getting better I just noticed today that Stella de Oro has a nice shining I never noticed before. But that's just my observation!

Natalie said:What I meant by "not what I'm looking for", was shimmery. That isn't the same as diamond dusting. I like it, but it's not the same. However, it will be another thing to try for if I can't get good diamond dusting on the seedling. Maybe shimmery is easier? I have no idea! Many of my darker daylilies are shimmery to some extent. Some more than others. It wasn't where I was headed with the seedling, but that's okay! It may be where I end up with it!

I'm a little confused... are you looking for diamond dusting? If you aren't looking for diamond dusting, by "shimmery" might you mean a velvety look or perhaps waxen?

"Shimmery" sounds like some of the shiny reds to me.

Re color clarification and muddiness... Some yellows carry a "mud" gene, which can be hidden by the yellow color. My understanding (perhaps incorrect) was that it had to do with lycopene, which I thought was present in melons.

My understanding is that to clarify color, you want to use a clear pink or a near-white, and I vaguely recall someone saying that they had better results with the clear pinks.

Sabrina, my Spanish Glow has lots of diamond dusting, which is why I thought I'd give it a try, just to see what happens. It kind of glows all on its own though, from a distance. I've always wondered if that is how it got the name, or if it was because of the diamond dust. It maybe be something totally different though!

Judy, I'm looking for diamond dusting. Waxen is a good word for what I think as shimmery. It's not sparkly, really. It's just shimmery, and the blooms do look a little like wax to me. It's another thing I really like, if there is an absence of diamond dusting, but it's not really what I hope to achieve on the seedling.

Polymerous, I've heard the same thing about clear pinks and near whites. For some weird reason, I thought I heard orange once, but maybe that was a nightmare. Hilarious!

I'm not trying to clarify the color at all. As far as I'm concerned, the color is perfect. I see no mud, or anything cloudy, and it is just enough different that I am not sure what I'd even call it at this point. I just want it to sparkle if possible!

Lol, Natalie! You never know, though... I have an orange seedling which isn't too muddy.

I'm trying to play catch-up on seedling notes and I thought I'd throw this out there. Don't ask me what this seedling is from, because I haven't a clue. Confused It is one of a batch of volunteer seedlings found in 2014 (therefore presumably from crosses made in 2013). Unfortunately, I potted them all up in 4" pots which I left in the dirt in the side yard, and some critter (squirrels, raccoons) decided to knock the pots over and pull out the tags. So even though I have notes on the volunteers ("# A was found near plant Z..."), I don't know what the original number of the volunteer seedling was, so I am now calling it "SV-14-X" (Spring Volunteer 2014 "X" (the unknown)).

Anyway, the point of all of this is that this is a moderately heavily diamond dusted seedling, the most diamond dusted of this crop of volunteers. Apart from that, the seedling (sadly) is nothing to be excited about... older form, shorter scape, miserable budcount. It does sparkle, though... (the images were taken at 11:51 am). I wish I could get that sparkle and edging on something larger (the bloom is maybe about 4") and with better form and budcount and branching...

He didn't say if this was a seedling or a registered cultivar, but diamond dusting it does have!

Judy - That is a GREAT photo of diamond dust! Any chance there is a photo of the entire bloom?

I have a seedling (unknown parents) that has diamond dust and the golden braid along the ruffles. This year it didn't put out but a couple of blooms. I need to move it. I think it is too crowded near shrubs. Here is a photo of mine:

CCC34: (Unknown Parentage) This is last year's photo. I didn't get a chance to take any photos of the very few blooms it had this year, but it looked the same .... no noticeable changes and still had a lot of bling:

The entire bloom:

This is a close-up of the golden braiding along the ruffles and you can see the diamond dusting on the sepal. Diamond dust is hard to capture in photos:

Becky, did you notice more diamond dusting this year, compared to last year, on that seedling? I sure hope so!

Thanks Becky. Hopefully that answers my initial question as to whether or not diamond dusting will improve over time. I'm still hopeful that my seedling will be more sparkly next year, but now I'll be prepared to pout if it doesn't. Whistling Hilarious!

I only have the one that has very prominent diamond dusting. The rest of my daylilies don't have the bling that one does. And you watch .... it will die just because I think it is special. Rolling my eyes. D'Oh!

Another older daylily with beautiful diamond dusting and bright pure red/pink coloration is Becky Lynn. I saw it in person and made the mistake of passing it by and have regretted it ever since.

"I'm hoping to get a seedling that is worthy of being registered as a memorial to my mother. I think I finally got what I've been wanting, but it isn't quite perfect. It needs diamond dust! She was in love with anything shiny! The seedling is now 2 years old, and I think I see just the tiniest amount of diamond dust on it, but I wish there was more. Is this a trait that shows up better with age? I noticed zero on it last year, which was its first year to bloom, and now I see a tiny bit. It was actually ugly to me last year, and this year, I think it is beautiful. I have other seedlings blooming for the first time ever this year with lots of diamond dust, but the flowers aren't worthy of putting her name on them."

Natalie, I do hope you've kept those other seedlings that bloomed for the first time last year with lots of diamond dust, because sometimes it's amazing how different the blooms can look by the second year of bloom!
Betty
