BOXES ARE HERE !!!

Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

6 big boxes, so I could use a hand sorting if anybody is available this week. Joyanna has dance classes Thursday and Friday evenings, but Jim could take her, so either of those days would work.

Saturday morning would work in a pinch, but I did tell Robin I'd be at her place early to help organize the plant drop zones etc.

PLMK!

UPDATE

We had a few things missing from our order this fall, because they hadn't shipped out yet from the fields in Holland. I just talked to Karin in their office, and she said the following should ship out to me 10/1.

Tulip 'Pink Sweet Mix'
Leucojum 'GG'
Ipheion 'RF'
Cyelamen pers.

That's also the projected ship date for amaryllises. I'll have 'Princess' bulbs for anybody who got them last year (they didn't bloom out as the correct variety --they were all some combination of red/white and single blooms). You don't have to pick them up, they can be held until the seed swap.

Do we want to talk about a possible amaryllis group buy, with pickup mid-October? Lisa, if you're willing, maybe we could pick up at your place since you've got that big box of tulips coming... that way you'd get them asap. (I'm not just volunteering her, folks, she said she'd host sorting/pickup sometime!)

I've been preoccupied with Joyanna's birthday party (this Sunday at Ballenger Creek Park from 2 to 5 -- butterfly theme, lots of crafts, anybody want to join the fun?) and STILL haven't finalized the invoices. Soon, I hope!

I won't be back till the 5th. Lisa will have the box of tulips then? And wish we could join you Sun (realized I'd forgotten to tell you) - I forgot we're heading to the Smithsonian on Sun. Hurray!

It's currently marked for shipment on the first... meaning they'll ship it if they have it, but they expect to have it by then. Usually takes 2 days to reach me in MD. When we've got a pickup time/place, you can get them then or they'll be at my place or Lisa's, whichever is easier for you to get to.

Have fun Smithsonian-ing!

Jill, it's fine with me if bulbs are delivered to my house. DD lives with us, will accept delivery.
Thing is, I'll be away traveling until Monday, October 26.
DD Is a gem, but I doubt I can cajole her into sorting, labeling bulbs, arranging for pick-ups.
How 'bout pick-ups in November?

What is the latest they can be planted?

Bulbs can be planted any time the ground isn't too frozen to make a hole (and I even know of people who pried up frozen slabs of surface dirt, planted, and flipped the frozen dirt back on top). Tulips do need some amount of cold to bloom, though, so I'd say by the end of January.

And I would NOT advise planting while the ground is still so warm... the bulbs will just start sprouting. If you've planted, odds are they will be fine, so don't worry about it... but if you haven't put them in the ground yet, hold off a while.

We can do pickup the first weekend in November, although if anybody is interested in ordering Amaryllis bulbs, that's pushing it a bit for holiday bloom (takes 6-8 weeks, although a heat mat can usually push it closer to 6... and I think the Israeli and Peruvian ones bloom quicker than the Dutch bulbs).

Do we want Amaryllises this year, or wait until next year?

I've got a few 'Princess' bulbs coming that I can use as gifts this year, and I have a fair number that should bloom this year, so I could pick up a few but not the kind of quantity I've done in the past.

However, I a quite tempted by 'Gervase', a jumbo (36+) Dutch bulb that's priced about $8, maybe plus shipping, depending on whether they're willing to sort of toss other bulbs in with 'Princess'.

The best bargains are generally the jumbo bulbs from Peru. There are 4 still in stock, red & white 'Minerva', white 'Denver', blushing pink 'Vera', and the classic 'Red Lion'.

Past favorite 'Blossom Peacock' is out of stock, and I'm not sure it was ever in stock this year. However, I see that 'Double Dream', another that got raves, is still in stock.

LMK what catches your eye... if we have some interest, I'll start a new thread, and we can let people know about the sale.

Thanks for checking in!

Lisa, you had Gervase and Vera on your initial wish list, and I like them too. Let me know how many you want (or would be willing to take) of those, please. I can take 2-4 of each.

This afternoon I had decided to pass on buying more Amaryllis. Well, that lasted about 20 minutes.
I'm up for 3-4 Gervase and 3-4 Vera.
Btw, I kept my bulbs from last year in pots outside under a tree canopy, but they're looking kinda ratty now. Do you have a link for pimping up year-old Amaryllis?

I pull mine out before it freezes, throw them in a box for a couple of weeks to a couple of months (eg, when I get around to them again), trim off the ratty leaves, and repot in fresh potting mix with fertilizer... They'll soon get blooms and new leaves, or in some cases leaves before blooms. Unless the bulb got really small and didn't recover, they should be blooming size. You've got another month or so if you want to boost their growth with fertilizer and a regular watering schedule... Smiling

ADR just emailed a new availability list!

OK, quick & dirty, let's see what additional amaryllises we might want to pick up at Lisa's in late October/early November. (You can also pick them up from me another time, even as late as the plant swap... I can keep them in the basement, where they usually "hold" just fine with minimal sprouting)

Plant them right away, and you'll have blooms for Christmas (6-8 weeks, and the Peruvian ones are usually more like 5-6). Save a couple pink/white ones for Valentine's Day!

Here's the link to the Amaryllis page at ADR. Note that some of the varieties on their current list (below) are not on this page!

We are getting a replacement box of 'Princess' (they bloomed "wrong" last year). Anybody who wants one, LMK, as I had ordered several of them last year and could bump a few loose. I think they were around $5, maybe a little less.

The one I really want to get is 'Gervase', which made me literally gasp out loud at the Philly Flower Show. It's a Dutch bulb, jumbo 36+ size, $8 plus shipping. I want 4 but will take more.

There are 4 Peruvian amaryllises still available in the Jumbo size: 'Minerva', 'Olaf', 'Vera', and 'Baby Star'... they should be around $5, give or take a little depending on shipping.

There's a long list of Israeli and Peruvian amaryllises available in the smaller (usually 28/30 cm) size. Looks like the Peruvian ones should be around $3, and Israeli bulbs around $5.

Here's that list:
Emerald Dawn
Half & Half
Marquis
Minerva
Opal Star
Pink Flush
Princess
Red Peacock
Tinkerbell

Apple Blossom
Bolero
Cherry Blossom
Denver
Design
Lemon Star
Minerva
Olaf
Orange Souvereign
Rosita
Vera
Baby Star

Hey Jill,
I'll stick to my plan of ordering 3-4 Gervase and 3-4 Vera and would like to bump that up to include Princess (1-2) and Apple Blossom (1-2). I'm flexible.
Btw, good selection of Amaryllis bulbs here in Corsica, average cost is €8 ($8.10).
Hmm. Considering baggage weight limits. One Amaryllis bulb weighs almost as much as a big jar of Amora Dijon mustard.
Mustard wins.

and mustard is legal to bring back... bulbs need to have an inspection stamp.

OK, Lisa... I'll put you down for a couple of Princess and a couple of 'Apple Blossom' or 1-2 of another variety -- waiting for Donner to weigh in with her choice(s)...
