I want to get some new daylilies to replace some of the doubles (two of the same plant, not doubled blooms) I have in my garden. However, I have some seed pods setting on the plants that I am planning on replacing. I know, poor planning on my part. Anyway, I was wondering how late is too late to plant daylilies in zone 6a. Is there a suggested "x number of weeks before the projected first frost" for daylilies?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm in SE Michigan and I've planted a few as late as early October and haven't lost them. Ideally though, I would be done planting by mid-September. If you already have the seed pods going, I'm sure you'll have them harvested in plenty of time to move your plants and plant new ones. I would not set any more pods on the plants you're planning to move at this point though.

I cannot say when it is too late; however, my preferred Daylily planting and dividing time is mid to late August. This gives the plants plenty of time to get established. Keep them well watered. I'm in zone 6a.

Thank you for the replies. Most of the plants I plan to move have finished blooming so I won't have to worry about fighting the urge to set more pods. I think the pods will definitely be ready by late August. Plenty of time it sounds like
