My dwarf mondo grass is established and beginning to produce side shoots, but something is eating it down to the ground. Unless I find a way to discourage the perpetrator, I can't see how it can survive. There are no deer here, but I have seen a rabbit and several chipmunks and squirrels. Is there something I can spread on the ground around the plants (mothballs?) or spray on them to deter these munching critters? Could it be an insect? Earwigs perhaps?

Rabbits, chipmunks and squirrels will all happily munch on your mondo grass. There's not much you can do to discourage them.

My daughter puts out rabbit food for her wild bunnies. That works on them but hasn't discouraged the chipmunks. I've had squirrels eat my cactus plants!

Building a barricade (rabbit wire?) would slow the rabbits down but not the others.

I've used scent deterrents to discourage those munching pests, the one that worked best is a spray from HD or Lowe's called Critter Ridder. It smells and tastes bad, so you can spray it on the plants and around the area. Don't spray it when it's windy or it will make you sneeze and irritate your eyes - it has black pepper in it.

There are also granular scent deterrents that worked very well for us at the school garden when we had a bunny visiting. Just sprinkled it around the area on the ground. It lasts through watering and rain, as well.

Mondo grass was a magnet for rabbits in my yard. And once they found it, they made my backyard a home. I finally gave up, and ripped out about 40 linear feet of it around my patio, because they gnawed it to the roots. And once it was depleted each season, they ate other things in the gardens once they were living there
