I didn't see a thread devoted to hosta pictures in the last few weeks, so I'm going to start one here. Unfortunately, I only have one type of hosta right now. I keep searching for particular cultivars at the local big box stores and they don't have the varieties I'm looking for (although they had them last year and I didn't purchase them --figures, right?)

Here is my adorable, beautifully-blooming Blue Mouse Ears:

Maybe I can help. What cultivars do you want?

I'm primarily looking for varieties with themed names at the moment:

Patriotic names:
Liberty -was at the big box store last year
Patriot -was at the big box store last year
American Hero
American Sweetheart
Dawn's Early Light
etc.

Military-related names:
Metal of Honor
Names relating to the Army (and Navy)
Etc.

Sci-Fi:
Captain Kirk
Battle Star
Vulcan
Galaxy
Dancing Stars
etc.

Fantasy names:
Magic Fire
Dragon Tails
Anything with 'dragon' in the title (particularly the one that has red stems... Red Dragon?).
Etc.

Any with Daisy or Ginger in the name:
Daisy Doolittle
Etc.

I know Sebright Gardens has quite a few, but between buying daylilies and iris, I just can't go on a hosta spending spree yet. I suspect I might be able to in a few years.

Do you know of any cultivars that would fit my themes that might not be at Sebright Gardens, by chance? I'm always open to suggestions. I also don't need to stick to only themed cultivars...if there is a variety that is particularly unique and worth having, I'm all ears. I'm all ears! Big Grin (Speaking of which, isn't there one called Elephant Ears that is really huge?)

DND, look at my plant list. Last month I offered several hostas for sale mostly for $7.

Theme gardening with hostas can be constricting especially because some may be yet too costly.

The safest hosta theme garden is hostas of the year since two of the requirements for Hosta of the Year are availability and priced $15 or less. There are 20 hostas of the year since the first was named in 1996, So Sweet.

The pictures that I submitted on July 10, are planted on one bed themed hostas of the year. There are two other of the same theme beds, and I must start another.

I've never done a theme garden. I just see an empty spot and plant something there!

I planted hostas of the year to educate. It is a simple way to quickly locate them amongs the hundreds of hostas.

I plant more according to light requirements, color, size, and the effect I want with other companion plants. I plant displays for my customers to see the plant as an adult and what other plants are good companions.

And, of course, sometimes I just need to plant it someplace until I decide what I am going to do with it. There is always the option to pot it if I am going to sell it.

Gerry, I went through your list of hostas this morning and WOW do you have a lot! I found quite a few that would fit nicely into a themed garden. I'm not ready to plunk a bunch of money down yet on hostas... But there is a good chance I'll be asking you about availability next year.

I sold for a while, so I know the hard work you put into your display gardens. I don't open my gardens to the public, and I've even quit labeling the hosta. I just enjoy my little bit of paradise, and work at my own pace to maintain it!

I love that Gunther's Prize!!

Little Treasure and Midnight at the Outside also caught my eye. Really, they are all very pretty!

I'll have to look up which hostas have the most unique blooms...

I recently saw a Gunther's Prize with only 2 leaves sell for $100 on a Facebook hosta buyers group! I guess I'd better take special care of mine! They must be getting harder to find.

I'd love a 'Gunther's Prize' but at that kind of a price, no.
