Is a turk cap lily the same plant as the tiger lily?

Turk's Cap Lily, American Tiger Lily and Swamp Lily are all Lilium superbum - an American native. Lilium lancifolium (synonym Lilium tigrinum) is also called Tiger Lily but native to Asia.

I'm trying to figure out what I have I was told it is a tiger lily but I thought it looked a lot like a Turk's cap Lily until I got to reading and I guess the Tiger Lily has little bulblets in each leaf and the Turk's cap makes seeds so are they the same family but different plant or same plant all together

I think yours is the Asian Tiger Lily. Having a native lily isn't as easy as you might think. Its not sold everywhere - it would be a specialty plant.

Did you plant your tager lily? If so, did the label say "tigrinum"?

It was gave to me and she said she thought it was a tiger lily. I dug them up before they were blooming.

You have Lilium lancifolium, formerly L. tigrinum. Pretty sure not L. superbum. I see bulbils on the stem. Tiger Lily is a common name for it as well as at least one other species, L. columbianum.

Heath, I assume what you mean is you were hoping it was Lilium superbum? If so you might find a vendor that carries it. B&D Lilies sold it several years ago but not at this time. Martagon lilies also have a common name "Turk's Cap". So you can see it gets confusing when using common names, the botanical names work better as each plant has a unique botanical name.

Yes lilium superbum is what I have wanted for a long time. But I am very happy with the lilium lancifolium and I know I will get the lilium superbum sooner or later. And you are right about common names being very confusing. They are just a lot easier for me to pronounce.
