Mike,

I received my baby yesterday. It is in superb shape. I planted it this morning. I will treasure it like all my other adeniums. Thank you so much for all the work you put into this.

Sylvain.

Yes, the good old "It's going to get cold and we have to bring the plants in" exercise. The things we do for our plants. So, I wreck my back bringing in about fifteen 24-inch diameter pots into the house and while my back kills me for 4 days, I hear things like "EEEUUUWWW... There's a frog in the house!, must have come in with the plants". Also, "EEEKKK! There's a curlytail lizzard in the house!, must have come in with the plants". And my favorite: "There's leaves everywhere!". Times like that, I just want to move into the laundry room. And when the threat of cold is passed, I wreck my back again bringing out all those heavy pots, only to hear "Look at the mess these pots did on the floor". While my back is killing me, I might as well wash the ceramic floors. The things we do for our plants!

Take care, all.
Sylvain.

Good Morning every one, oh so sorry to have been away for so long. With our weather getting a tad cooler I'm able to breath easier and have a bit more energy so will try to get active again. I've missed all of you and in trying to catch up on the posts can't believe Sylvain is having so much success in growing D.R. From seed! I seem to recall a guy by the same name who said something about not having any luck growing from seed, and wasn't going to try it. Hilarious! Congratulations Sylvain, now your hooked Hurray! . Wondering where Rucky is, I'm tempted to encourage him to get a rain barrel ! We here in S. Fla are also under water restrictions and I now have three rain barrels and I'm going to get three more soon. A special hello to Doris,Ol whats her name,Hetty, and every one else,. glad to see all the new members who are now hooked on Desert Rose. I hope to keep up and get some photos on soon. I tip my hat to you.

Hey, hey! Look who joined: Jim. I was thinking of you just recently. Nice to see you among us. Yes, I once said I was notoriously useless with seeds. But, to my defense, I was speaking of long-dead seeds probably harvested during the Kennedy administration. It turns out that with fresh seeds produced by my own plants, I can be rather successful.

Take care, all.

JIM!!! wowee, thought I was seeing things there for a minute.

Can't wait to see your pictures.

Here's "Moonlight" from khwarunee in Thailand. Ebay seller. Ha, every plant has a $15 shipping charge. I ordered twelve plants and asked for a shipping discount, they gave me a seventeen cent discount, hahahahaha.

Jim, your rain barrels should be full full full soon!

This is the Adenium arabicum that JT sent me so long ago. The caudex is about eight inches wide. I had it quite dry for two months, it went dormant, lost all leaves, and now has the one bunch of buds and the magnificent tiny bloom. Oh, I dried it because there was a bit of rot. Arghhhh. Had to cut off one end of a limb. I dislike pruning.

Good Morning folks; Melissa I've never thought of measuring a caudex! As soon as our rain lets up I think I'll do that just for kicks and giggles. Sylvain, I was successful using Wilfreds paint brush method last year. I no longer have any in pots, got darned tired of lugging them in and out of the house and ended up putting all of them in the ground. I lost about 15 by not being careful when weeding Angry but I still have about 50 that are doing nicely, I just gave a a little guy away to a neighbor yesterday, it had no leafs but two white flowers and is only about two inches tall. Doris I lost track of my dark knight and would sure appreciate seeing a picture of yours in bloom if you have one. Our rain here was totally expected so the day b-4 I threw a bag of miracle grow in two of my rain barrels and fed everything in sight. Our drainage is such that I don't get too concerned about over watering. Charleen is the bog forum still active here? and chef Mike I was wondering if you are actually a chef? Are you on any other cooking forums?

Oh, I forgot to mention,,,how did the experiment go with the C.D. disk? I think it was JD who was trying it to get an interesting caudex from a cutting, anyone know what happened? Chefmike, you might be interested in that; I recall reading that you were wondering if a cutting would get a caudex, as I recall JT might have been on to something by putting a cd disk beneath the plant cutting forcing the roots to spread out and then going down into the ground. morning Jim (boy that sounded good), I think your buddy tried it, not sure if she discarded it or forgot it Big Grin
I was totaly unhappy with my dark knight as it turned out to be red, but it did have a little different markings, and the buds were interesting.

How about all these seed pods, and I have three about ready to split, all on the same plant.

J.T. , I checked it out, hey, I think it's neat. and you don't recommend it ----why? Confused Every time I cut back some of my larger ones I hate to throw away what I cut, with the CD thing I would have extra to give away. But, then again I bet it's labor intensive, so not for me Sad . Doris, all those pods and you didn't even have to hand pollinate huh Hurray! , I can't believe your going to raise some more baby's! You still don't have any planted in the ground right? I'd be tempted to try it even with your cold winters, just bury it under a ton of mulch and see what happens. Is the dark knight the pink buds you just published? I expected it to be a dark red which I have a few of, I'm just going to tell neighbors my dark red are dark knights. Makes it seem like I know what I'm talking about Hilarious! . I gotta admit that seeing those shots of great looking yellows give me pause for thought and am considering getting seed one more time. Hmm, gotta talk to Melissa about that and get her opinion. (I know she will have one Rolling on the floor laughing )

OK, Hi, everyone!!

I had one of those "Oh, NO!!!" thoughts late last night when I was reviewing the day yesterday.

Mike, did you say you'd put your plants in the refrigerator?? Go get them out right this minute! They hate temperatures under 50 degrees. Or 55 degrees. They can take 120 degrees, they are tropical plants. They don't have bulbs, they have a fat stem and roots that are called a CAW DECKS, caudex. The caudex stores moisture for the plant to survive dry seasons. A large Adenium, Desert Rose, can stand to be out of the soil, bare root, with no water for months. Many months sometimes.

Cold is bad for Adeniums. "Cold" is under 50-60 degrees.

Whew!

Blooming today, "Selona" bought from Durham Botanicals in Florida. This little flower loves to be on the dry side.
