Rita - That's a great article. I found out about a the Dale Thomas daylilies because of you. His August Cherry is one of my very best lates!

I second bxncbx's recommendation of Olallie Daylilies in South Newfane VT. Ollalie's is an annual trek for us -- always @Blueberry picking time. They have daylilies and blueberries for sale (pick your own).... A great way to spend an afternoon AND there's a really nice river not far from Ollalie's bring your tube and spend the afternoon floating.
As for lates, my absolute favorite is Regal Finale. New favorite

Here is a link to the Garden Ideas Article I did about late bloomers.

Rita, That is another great article! Thanks for all of the late recommendations! I especially like your suggestion of creating a late daylily bed. I was looking at your 4 group shots of your lovely gardens in that article. By chance, could you tell me the name of the red one in the foreground and the spider one to the right of the zinnia in image 7?
In image 10, there's a lovely bi-tone in the foreground, and a delightful pink one in the center. Do you recall their names?

Thanks,
Cynthia

@newyorkrita, most of my late purchases was inspired by you various collection of lates that you posted in the past. @beckygardener, I got Genesta as a single fan on the LA and within a couple years it was a clump. It is currently very close to the garden hose where she get watered on a regular basis. It will be interesting to see who is the last to bloom this year. Had a ffo on Classic Rose this morning.

My Classic Rose is about half done and it is looking good this year. It is one of my latest bloomers. I divided it last year and I think that really helped it this year.

Love, love, love late bloomers. They not only extend your bloom season, but they also come up later in the spring so they miss all the late freezes and scapes are less affected by wonky spring weather. I'm into my late season now living in zone 7 but the garden is still going strong. Some of the lates that I'm enjoying today:

WHITE EYES PINK DRAGON (Gossard)
DREAM SOCIETY, LINGERIE PARTY, PARADISE ROAD (Hanson)
SHE'S GOT LEGS (Reckamp)
AUDREY'S DADDY (Todd)

and my own (Davisson) intros:
CURT'S GIFT
A LOT LIKE LOVE
PAINTED GIRLS
LAST BLAST
ONE MORE ANGEL
YADA YADA YELLA
LADY HA HA
CAPTAIN NOODLES
EXHAUSTED ROOSTER
MISTER MONOPOLY
JOLLY UNCLE JELLY
AND a whole lot of seedlings

Judy - Do you have any data on yours that might do well in the most southern regions, like zone 9b in south-central Florida? I love looking at the photos of your intros. You have some beauties!!! I just didn't know if any of them would survive down here in this long season heat and no cold winters.

Almost all my introductions were hybridized to be hardy in severe climates and need a cold winter rest period. I have a few evergreen introductions that you might try....but I don't recommend my dormant or semi-evergreen introductions for hot climates that don't get "winter".

Judy - Yes, I had read about many of your introductions and them being cold hardy. Which evergreen intros do you suggest I try?

For the past 3 years, Davi's YADA YADA YELLA has been my favorite VL bloomer. When it starts blooming it overshadows everything in the garden, daylilies and non-daylilies alike. Her WORKING OVERTIME also puts on quite a show and is a massive plant. And PAINTED GIRLS has the best color of any late bloomer that I know of.

Curt Hanson also has LOTS of late bloomers. I tend to find that a lot of his intros that are registered as ML bloomers actually bloom in the L to VL season in my garden.

Mid-late, late and very late bloomers are my favorites!

The best late daylily in my garden is Green Flutter. I like the dramatic fluorescent yellow/green color of its blooms, its clean bright green foliage and its good branching. These photos were taken today:

The daylilies I have had for more than a year that haven't started blooming here yet this year are:

Indian Ripple (last year FFO was July 29th)
Olfactory Evidence (last year FFO was Aug 2)
The Dream Society (Hanson, got last spring and FFO was on Aug 17 last year)

Far From the Madding Crowd just had it's FFO yesterday (Hanson, last year FFO was on July 28)

Olallie Autumn Gold has not started blooming yet here in KY [our bloom season starts at the beginning of June] & won't for another week or so. It is by far my latest daylily. My most prolific late is Carman Renee-every year! It is still going well. And many years, Belle Isle Sentry, which is my first to bloom late May or early June, waits on its rebloom until August.

Here's a group shot of a bunch of my lates bed from last week. There's not quite as many this week [Hyperion is done and a couple of these are winding down] but it is still pretty good. Carman Renee was just getting started--it is short this year and behind Hyperion.

Readdream - That is very interesting that some of your cultivars wait a month or two before reblooming. I am wondering now if I will have any that do that.

I have Betty Warren Woods who is now putting up her 2nd set of re-blooms. This time there is only one scape instead of 2. I guess the other fan is worn out from the previous 2 blooming periods. Her fans are pathetic looking now and she has been terribly thrip prone for most of the bloom season, but she just keeps producing those scapes and blooms. And the blooms are always perfect. Just wished the foliage would increase and become more resistent to pests. She is a blooming machine with just 2 small fans! Ha!
