In the last 2 weeks I keep seeing articles about PG being the latest rage in entertainment. I don't even know who or what Pokémon is but thought I would post this -

I remember (a long time ago) hearing a friends children talking about a Pokemon game and now that I google, this reminds me of a friend's son talking about his Game Boy and Pokemon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

... the past few days I keep hearing about Pokemon Go and see that it's apparently become a craze with children and adults alike with their smart phones.

Sighing! I'm just too old to appreciate games on phones!. Green Grin!

I'm showing my young age because I know everything about Pokemon, growing up I was a huge fan. I too play Pokemon Go.

Basically, you walk around outside or bike (yes you need to leave you house to play) and Pokemon randomly appear on your phone screen in game, you throw poke balls at them to catch. The higher the level of the Pokemon the better. Some Pokemon are rarer than others and more desirable to catch.
There are landmarks in blue to collect free items like trainer points, pokeballs, and Pokemon eggs to hatch Pokemon to keep.
When your over level 5 you battle your Pokemon at the Pokemon gyms nearby, hence why you want strong Pokemon, and can use stardust to increase their levels and attacks.
You evolve Pokemon to make them stronger.

That's the basics of it.

I heard the company are adding more features so this is more like the gameboy games where you battle other players and trade Pokemon you caught.

I think it's great that they finally came up with a game where everyone can socialize, get off their butts, and outside for a change. They interviewed a young man who said, "It's fun! I think this is the most I've walked all summer! " LOL They encourage people to play with friends as a safety factor. Already they have had some bad stuff happen, robberies and stuff. The bad guys always find the loophole, don't they?? The game has is so popular Nintendo is bringing back their classic Pokemon and other games in November.

Well I don't think there's much socializing going on, it's more like a bunch of zombies running around staring at their smart phones while they get dumber and dumber. One guy fell off a cliff. Last weekend my renters took their kids to a park, and while carrying a baby around some moron who was playing the game not looking where he was going nearly ran into them. The place was filled with people roaming around bumping into each other playing the game, missing the beauty of the park, and the opportunity to met and talk to others. Now we have another thing for stupid people to try to do while driving, besides texting. I do suppose it's better for them then sitting in front of their game boy. Oh well, some company will be making trillions of dollars I guess. Sighing! Wanna know how I really feal about this???? If only one of the Pokémons was a horseweed. I would be glad seeing horseweeds being captured. Seriously, it's growing on the side of our MA highways, in our parks — EVERYWHERE! Grumbling

Officials overreact about this. Ok calling to go into a jail is weird, but saying people look suspicious walking around or too many people are at a public park, that is too nit picky. I've been at the firehouse in front and nobody cares.

There are huge hidden dangers about the game. People can put Pokemon where they want so your child could be getting set up by a molester to grab them also people have been robbed by people setting them up. People have been hit by cars playing and as Tom said someone walked off a cliff it's getting to be too much. Technology is great but we can't let it control us. I too find my self so wrapped up in emails and the net that sometimes the things I should be doing gets pushed back.

Seriously? someone playing the game can put a Pokemon wherever they choose? How could that be expected to NOT lead to problems?

and, you're right, Daniel -- all too possible to spend too much time on the computer and neglect our real-life stuff!

Technology has it's ups and downs. I was not an easy convert to internet use, all that dot.com speak on television was annoying 15 years ago. Still is in regard to advertising but the internet is a neat thing. Taught me how to type. Just look at the diversity of this forum. I've avoided a smart phone even though it would be handy on the job coupled with a credit card reader. I just don't get the game thing. I do understand the desire for entertainment but the common use of cell phones that have now become common internet devices has made for quite a rude society

I grew up with the invention of video gaming. Pong anyone? LOL! We played it. Singles, doubles and the tennis version. Good grief! Big Grin

You had to adjust uhf/vhf and sit in a stationary position with a short leash. Mobile? NO!

Real video games emerged when I was 12-13 with games like Pacman and Asteroids. New and fun but I still prefer a real pinball machine. It requires both hands, both eyes, both ears, and physical action to play a machine properly. I pity the thumb-scrolling generation. I do appreciate what it offers to folks with disabilities but I've got a fully functional 2nd cousin that grocery shops online. The grocery is my favorite trip of the week. Impulse purchases will bend the budget but you only live once. I'm still one to walk in to place a "to go" order at a fast food joint, I carry prescriptions to the pharmacy desk. I work alone and rarely have a lot of human interaction ( a good thing) but I seek it when and where I can. Internet smiles are fine Smiling , real ones are far better.

Another stupid electronic thing to keep the younger generation oblivious to their surroundings. Last week we helped at a fireworks show and 4 teen boys went OVER the "CAUTION..........do not cross" tape for some stupid Pokeman. Oh, that's right, that caution tape did NOT refer to them. Angry
