What I'd like to see are evaluations on plants that I don't yet own... namely, particular Goldner and Davisson daylilies.

What would be helpful would be if there were a sticky somewhere with the list of (already evaluated) Daylily of the Day cultivars, in alphabetical order, to make it easy to find those threads.

I don't know if they've already been done, but (among daylilies with 3 or more users owning them) I'd be willing to comment on (and/or would like to see others' comments on):

DECEMBER WEDDING
MADGE CAYSE
PLEATED PUMPKIN
SEARS TOWER
WONDER OF IT ALL

It'd be especially nice if users responding to these poll threads, if they have seedlings from these daylilies, would also comment on the quality and character of the seedlings.
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Some of these are VERY new to my garden (just planted this season)...so not sure how useful a report from me would be.

Also, how is this information used and how can it be accessed when viewing a cultivar on the plant database? For those cultivars that are registered with the AHS and are missing information (e.g., no bud count), is the information from these reports used to "fill in" the missing information on the database?

Polymerous - Accessing just daylily cultivars that have been featured as Daylily of the Day by alphabetical order is something that I hope Dave will do at some point, but it was not a priority for him at the time the daylily of the day feature was created. But I will point him to this thread to let him know that it is still a needed extension of that feature. I would really like to be able to access cultivars featured by alpha order, too! This daylily forum does not use stickies from what I have been told. So .... I agree with everything you requested for evaluations. But that is up to the members who actually post about any of the cultivars. Some members post a brief statement and others give a lot more detailed information. I believe any and all info is helpful to others who are considering the cultivar or who recently acquired the cultivar.

Amber - See this post above: http://garden.org/thread/view_... That will tell you how to find the information. You would click on the blue highlighted link under the photo to access the Daylily of the Day for a particular cultivar.

And the answer to the second part of your question: No. Posted evaluation data is not incorporated into the actual Plant Database file. The Daylily of the Day feature is just a thread for member evaluations of a particular cultivar.

I hope this answers your questions.

Not true.
As moderator I have the option to make a thread a sticky. We have had many requests from members to make a sticky for this or that. If everything everyone wanted were to be made a sticky every time you come into the Daylily forum you would see numerous stickies at the top of the page and would need to scroll way down to find the current threads.
The Plant of the Day has it's own forum and is a separate feature from the Daylily forum. There is a link in the Welcome box on the right hand side of the Daylily forum that will take you to the list of daylilies in the Plant of the Day forum . I would suggest making a list of the daylilies you might like to see featured and and check to see if they have been featured as a Plant of the Day in the NGA database - the link to the Daylily of the Day thread for each featured cultivar is found on the top righthand side of a cultivars database page.

Jon and I would like members to please pick cultivars that they OWN, that ALSO list several other owners (at "least" 3 members that have the cultivar) as "have" in the database so that more members here on ATP can post their evaluations. .

You need to go to a cultivars database page to check how many people have the plant before listing it to be featured so it should be an easy check to see if there has already been a Plant of the Day thread for that particular cultivar.
The best solution for this would be if Dave could make the search in the Plant of the Day forum alphabetical.

Char - Thanks for clarifying the info about stickies.

Creating a maximum list of 10 cultivars is pretty easy to check. Just go into the Plant Database, look up the cultivar, and check under the photo on the upper right hand side to see if it has ever been featured (it will be highlighted in blue and if you click on it, it will take you to the thread). If it has not been featured, then check to see how many people own it (there must be 3 members that "have" it.) The whole purpose of that is to try to ensure that there will actually be reviews and evaluations of any cultivar featured. We, unfortunately, do have some cultivars featured that have none or only 1 evaluation. It would be much more helpful if there were more evaluations for those cultivars. So much better to feature a cultivar that members "have" vs. cultivars that members don't have. The evaluations naturally come from members who have that featured cultivar.

I have mentioned the alphabetizing issue to Dave again. I know the "Past Plants of the Day" forum now has numerous threads listed for various species of plants. Just remember though, Dave is very busy with this website, so such a feature may not be a priority at this time.

The best way to check to see a featured daylily is to just go into the Plant Database and look them up. If you see that it was featured and you have it and want to submit an evaluation, you can do so at any time. I do give an acorn for evaluations. And you can submit an updated evaluation once a year for any particular cultivar.

This is where you find how many members "have" a cultivar:

Some people seem to not use the plant list, and I sometmes see few shown as having the plant but then pictures from many members. I choose plants in one way by looking at how many people have it, but I also look at how many people have submitted photos. There can be a big difference between the two! I figure if a lot have submitted photos, it's a pretty popular variety. They could sure submit evaluations, too!

Some of the photos submitted were from the daylily nurseries through a moderator or a member here on NGA. The nursery allows the photo here or the member visits the nursery and takes photos of a particular cultivar and posts it in the Plant Database. So they don't own the plant, but just published the photo(s) here in our database. Those members won't be able to do an evaluation.

But .... yes! you are correct that not everyone submits whether they own (have) a cultivar. So ....it's possible that lots of photos from different members means a high chance that many people could give an evaluation about the cultivar.

Either situation is possible, but it's best to choose a cultivar that has lots of photo submissions AND "have".

Another option for searching to see if a particular cultivar has been featured as a Plant of the Day is to go to the Past Plants of the Day forum and use the "Search this forum" box on the top right.
If you type in "Daylily" it will bring up a listing of all the daylilies, although they are not in alphabetical order.
If you type in a specific cultivar name it will find the thread where that daylily was featured if there is one.

Ah yes! I forgot that forum feature! Good idea, Char!

Now if we could just get the option to alphabetize the list, it would be great!

Yes! And you also chose Dragon's Eye! I like it, but mine needs to be divided, so it didn't perform as well this year.

Yup, it hasn't been as showy as 'Buttered Popcorn,' but heck, they're both first year! I'm just glad when they bloom! (and Dragon's Eye did, but just 2 blooms)
