Found these fellas on a little hill on a back road taking my son to his farm job this morning. Cluster of maybe 10 plants. The bulbils were huge and numerous. I'll Try to get better pictures next time

That would be the (normal) triploid form of Lilium lancifolium. It's likely that there use to be an flower garden there sometime in the past from an old homestead. They are not native but can persist for decades, even centuries, from the original planting. Fortunately, they are sterile, so never spread by seed. They are very virus tolerant, and surely carry a large virus load.

So, in other words, Dave, you don't want these anywhere near your good lilies.

I read that about lancifolum. Around here it seems like any time I'm driving all I see are day lilies. And it seems to be the same orange color everywhere. It was neat seeing lilium instead. Lol the road I was on is an old farm road so who knows what used to be there years ago.

Ditch lilies are a main plant in roadside Wisconsin. Nice to see the roadside blue of chickory and white of Queen Anne's Lace.
