It is ok, not even a big deal, really. Just assumed I was doing something wrong.

So to add my photo to the database,.......Let's say I have a Lily, so I go to the data base and find that exact lily, and download my picture there??? Is that correct? Or I can just post a picture of the lily in a forum, and the image will end up in the database. Maybe I am getting this afterall. Oh, gosh Jay. your so kind to give direction.

Yes you find the plant in the database, scroll down past all the photos to a section that say adding actions and under that will be a link that says upload photo. Click on that and there will be a green button that says Upload an image. Clicking on that will open a window on your computer where you can search for the photo you want to upload. Find the photo and upload it. Once it is uploaded it will show up on you plant list. One note after you upload a photo it takes a little time to show up in the database. If you have never uploaded before, it has to be approved by a database moderator. Once you have uploaded a certain number of photos (I'm not sure what the threshold is) they will no longer need to wait for approval.

Laurie, you can also copy your database photo directly into the comment section of your list, which appears a bit larger. I began doing this when the default thumbnail was the most popular photograph, and I liked the option to have my own photo along with the most popular photo. There has been some discussion about allowing the user to choose what photo to use as the thumbnail in your particular list, not sure what will happen in that regard. I'd sure like it - I rather like to see the thumbnail image change as folks add new photos. Usually a close-up of the plant's bloom will have the most thumbs, although sometimes a fall or wintry pic is the highlight.

Can you tell me how to copy a photo directly into the comment section of my list? I would be interested in doing that. Thanks.

It seems that either a "BB code" mor a URL will make a photo appear in your Comment.

1. Edit the entry using the icon like a pencil.

2. Copy a BB code or a URL from some photo that already exists in the NGA site. For example, add your photo to the plant database, then copy the BB code or URL from that photo.

3. scroll all the way to the bottom of the "edit" dialog. Paste the URL or BB code into the comment. You can have other text in the comment, as well.

4. Save Your Changes.

In the Plant Database, while viewing a single photo, here are the URL and BB code locations:

I believe that the URL will only create a link to the photo. But the BBC Code, or light box code from a forum will show the photo.

Jay,

Maybe it only "shows" from inside the "Manage Your Plant List" screen, but pasting a URL from one of bitbit's photos into my Comment field gave me this:

I knew it would take long to find a reason to use this smiley. D'Oh! D'Oh! You are correct, I just tried it and it worked. I don't know what I did wrong the other day, but it didn't work then.

Thank you all for your favorite practices. I have some testing and homework to do. I initially came here to remind myself of all the ins and outs of managing my landscape throughout the year, as life took me out of gardening for a bit.
As I have read many of your posts, the forum has been amazingly helpful at reminding me of what I use to do too, and when. The luxury of learning what others have learned so quickly and kindly, has helped jump start my yard, and it has not been so fun or looked so good for a long time. Thank you, guys. Another reason I found myself wanting to become a true blue member, was I loved the plant list, to use as documentation of a dated record of the plants I have, or lost and need. This has made me a little obsessed over pics. I am going to take time and learn this aspect and stop pestering you all quite so much. Sorry about that.
And in the mean time, I will post my rants and failures, and I will enjoy all of yours. There are some down right hilarious people here, who never fail to make me laugh, and a lot of people who rush in to advise and answer questions, or just empathize. It is just a pleasure to be here!!

Laurie, you ARE a true blue member and valued member and contributor.

It sounds like you could contribute articles if you like writing. That's one way to get acorns, too.

>> life took me out of gardening for a bit.

I think we learn a lot after we step back and come at something afresh after a few years. We are different, the weather is different, we have new ideas or advice and we try new things. Not just "experience", but perspective.

I look forward to learning from your rants, failures and successes !

>> stop pestering you all quite so much.

Please DON'T do that! Everyone learns from a good question, and the answers and the thought processes sit there for years to inform and inspire future members! Even the people with answers benefit from thinking about the question and their own experience, and coming to conclusions. Then they also benefit from the other answers that show alternatives or even "here's where I think you're wrong".

Win, win, win!
