Here's one of my fig plant- can someone identify which it is?
It has open eye - gets sour quickly and is
a good size- 1 3/4 in.

Here's some good info on fig varieties grown in the south: http://aggie-horticulture.tamu...

It talks about figs with the open eye being susceptible to souring.

Open eye varieties can be a pain where they get lots of rain or high humidity but in some areas they do well and the flavor makes them worthwhile to grow. All figs are not created equal some taste like melons some taste like peaches some taste like berries and so on. Brown turkey is very common in the south but so is Brunswick aka magnolia but it is even more prone to souring then bt. The leaves on Brunswick are very different than bt and the figs are more oblong than bt. the faint stripes on your fig remind me of bt but without a photo of the foliage its hard to tell because they both have what we call hollow centers. To make things even more complacated there are about 6 different brown turkeys out there. To stop your figs from souring you can put a drop of olive oil on the eye or a pice of medical or masking tape over the eye. This way they can fully mature before you pick them. Your figs in the photo could have used another day or 2 to get the highest brix and less latex which can burn your lips tounge and throat if you eat too many.

Thanks for that tip -

I've had this fig tree for numbers of years but this is the first time it has so many figs. I wonder if all the spring rain/flood we had helped. I had given up on it.

Sorry Betsy I don't recognize the leaf pattern. it's not Brunswick but could still be one of the BT's I wish I could be of more help. If you want to try some closed eye varieties let me know and maybe we could work out a trade this Fall. I have a lot of figs and can share either plants or cuttings with you that will do great in your area. I even have a few that came from TX. Feel free to tree mail me if interested and I'll be happy to work something out with you.

Yes, they do but when it really opened up, it had quit raining
I think I remember my gf telling me of an insect that can cause souring too, but rain has been the only cause in the past
We are going to the new place tomorrow, if I can remember, I will take pix

Opened one up and found fly/insect inside - I can smell the souring even before I pick them.

We grow figs, those look like our Brown Turkeys. Unfortunately, this year, for the first time we have no figs! It's been our most reliable crop for 4 years and this year every variety has failed. It remains a mystery to me, anyone with thoughts or similar issues?

You may have lost your early crop know as a "breba crop" due to a late frost or over pruning but fear not if the tree is still healthy you should get a main crop sometime in August. Breba figs grow on last year wood so if that wood get's damaged or pruned off you want get a early crop just a late one. Some varieties only have a breba crop some only have a main crop and some have both. to makes things even more complicated some need whats called the fig wasp & male fig tree to pollinate the figs to get ripe figs. These wasp are not native to the US but where imported into southern Cali some years back so farmers could grow a wider array of figs. It sounds crazy but a fig isn't actually a fruit but is whats called an inverted flower. common figs is what we grow everywhere else in the US and they don't need the fig wasp to produce figs and a male plant known as a caprifig. they are self fertile which is great in my eyes because when the fig wasp pollinates the fig they lay there eggs inside and die in the fig. Sounds nasty but when you buy dehydrated figs grown in California, Turkey, Italy, and Egypt you are buying figs with dead little wasp inside Drooling yum yum!! Just thank of it as added protein, this is also the reason seeds are more crunchy in the dehydrated figs sold in stores vs the ones we grow they have been pollinated so the seeds are fully developed.
