This image looks like a Rhus species instead of Malosma... not 100% sure here, but the leaves are shorter and the flowers are bigger in comparison. Take a look and see what you think. All 3 are native to the region.

You're right. It does look like a sugar bush. How stupid of me. I should know those things like the back of my hand. I put in a request that it be moved.
The plants do look similar. We have all three species growing in public gardens locally, plus the toyón which can also be easy to confuse. I should know them all by now, but I still rely on my trusty guide book to keep them sorted out.
