Edge of meadow under the partial shade of a small tree.

With the naked eye it looks like moss. It has some really neat protuberances showing.

Any ideas?

Hi-chelle,

It looks like you have scotch moss there. This is not an actual moss, but does look quite a bit like it. It generally grows in partial shade and should have some very small white flowers later in the season. Its a nice plant and works great as ground cover.

Thanks, Jonny. Welcome to ATP. Smiling

Do you know if the scotch moss is clearly discernible without magnification? The plants in my photos are shown magnified; I'm not sure by how much, but I do know that you really can't see much more than just green without it.

It is definitely a moss Chelle, you can tell that on the spore capsules in your first picture, hard to say which type as the pictures are very small, ...it could be a Polytrichum sp...

Now that I can upload larger pics, I'll see if I can take some new ones.

Thanks, Myriam. Smiling
