Well, I did the unthinkable ..... ackkkkkkk!

I accidentally broke off the entire scape of the freaky seedling. I could NOT believe it happened. I was trying to get the container out of the area it was in to better photograph the crazy growth and the disaster happened.

My question .... it appears that 1 of the buds is near bloom. If I stick this scape in sugar water, will it continue to develop and bloom? I am desperately wanting to see what the bloom looks like because of the nature of this plant. Has anyone ever gotten a bud to bloom after it was separated from the plant?

I just want to see 1 bloom on this. Is there hope????!!!

Boy! I am kicking myself over this. I hate when this happens, which doesn't happen hardly ever because I am usually so careful. And I was today, too ... but apparently not careful enough. Sad Sighing! Sighing! Sighing! Crying

Becky I had a storm break off a scape of Jolly Jester this year. I place it in a cup of regular water and had three more buds open.

Valerie and Stan - Oh! THANK YOU, THANK YOU! (I am bowing down to each of you for your response!)

@touchofsky and @GaNinFl another question .... Does the scape need to be in sun (or bright light) to bloom or can it be anywhere (like inside my house where it isn't so bright)?

Edited to add: Does it need to be in sugar water or just plain water (I use Spring water)?

I kept mine indoors on the dinning room table. It's dark in my house without a lot of natural light and it did fine. I did notice that the fragrance wasn't the same but the blooms colors were very close to what they should look.

I had mine in a bouquet, too, on the dining table indoors and they did fine. If I remember correctly, I just had them in plain water.

I cut some scapes for our club meeting and put them in a vase in plain water. After the meeting, I put the vase of scapes on the dining room table and I had daylilies open at least 5 days later. The last bud was not developed very well, so it was stunted and off color.

Hope yours do well so we can see the results of your hard work Smiling

I am linking threads. This scape is actually from my seedling ZZZ37 - Galaxy Explosion x Lily Munster which I discuss on this thread (Odd growth): The thread "Odd growth" in Daylilies forum

I am wanting to see if there is anything odd about the bloom like there is about this seedling's plant growth. The first scape of this seedling bloomed normally and it is also one of my favorite bloomers (out of several I received of this cross of seeds) which I got from Cindy (Hemlady). So ZZZ37 is NOT a seedling that has never bloomed yet. Though this second scape failed to produce buds, but instead produced a cluster of prolifs at the top of the scape. One of those prolifs created this scape. So it is a scape on a scape that is getting ready to bloom.

Just want to clarify why this broken scape was so important to me. It is not just any scape, but one I have been documenting and watching for months. Murphy's Law .... Rolling my eyes. Sighing! D'Oh! D'Oh! D'Oh!

A very unusual scape indeed! I can imagine you frustration at having broken it, but am hoping all turns out well.

Becky,

I agree with the others: just plain water will do ok and buds will keep growing and blooming I agree

I accidentally broke off 2 scapes last week and put them in a glas of water, and they did great until all buds had bloomed Lovey dubby

Back when we grew a thousand daylilies in clump strength we would go out and "harvest" multiple scapes loaded with buds and arrange them as bouquets. We would enjoy them for a few days and then replace them with new scapes. We got lots and lots of full blooms inside, well water, no sugar, worked great. Enjoy your bloom.

Thanks everyone! I feel relieved that I might actually get to see the bloom of this particular scape.

I sure hate when I knock off a bud or even worse (as in this case), break an entire scape off a plant. Thank goodness this scape has several buds on it close to blooming. Will post a bloom photo when it flowers. Smiling
