Here's my Homestead Purple today. Lighting's not too good, but you get the idea.

There's still some dead wood in there. Maybe I'll clean that up and cut it out tomorrow.

Mangogirl said:How many days does it generally take to root verbena in water at this time of year? It is in a warm room in very bright, indirect light from the window - Jacksonville, Florida.

Here's the answer: in as little as 36 hours! I have about ten cuttings in a clear glass jar and two of them have a new root from the leaf node about 1/8" long. Wow, like people had said, that was fast!

I wonder if the cellpack ones are doing as well? Probably - they haven't wilted at all. I'll let you know which of these cuttings does best in the long run.

Mangogirl, the surprise for me with this plant was that it survived winter. Most verbenas are not hardy here and people generally only grow them as annuals. In fact, Verbena Canadensis (of which the Homestead Purple is one), is the only one I know of that's rated as hardy this far north. I had planted them twice before and they didn't survive winter.

I think that after I clean up this spot I might have a lot of new plants that formed as little satellites where it formed roots at peripheral nodes. I'm not trying to root cuttings. I don't have space for many plants this huge size in my yard.

I only rooted that one cutting in fall in case these in my garden didn't come back.

I amended some soil pretty heavily to try and get this verbena and some Penstemons to survive the winter here. I'm hoping they do Smiling

The Verbena Homestead series and other Verbena canadensis cultivars are actually synonyms of Glandularia canadensis, so if you had these on your plant lists, you'll want to visit the Glandularia section of the database and re-enter the plants under those names.

I have this growing in two areas of my yard and I am zone 5. We had a killer winter this past year so bad many people lost evergreens and my verbena came back gangbusters.

I only had the one plant that survived one mild winter. Any others that I've planted only lasted one summer. This past winter was so severe that I lost plants that I'd had for years.
