Baja_Costero said:The so-called "rambling" aloes do not grow straight up for long, inevitably going sideways unless firmly staked. This is completely normal though often inconvenient.

When in doubt with an indoor succulent (or an outside one that gets light from only one direction) that leans one direction, point it away from the light and the plant will eventually correct (if it's not rambling like your aloe). I like to rotate my indoor plants when I water them if there's no compelling reason to keep them pointed one way.

I hope this helps. Smiling

Thank you, @Baja_Costero. Right now, it's bending at a 90° angle. Going to stake it today.

@tarev

Sorry for not getting back to you for such a long time. Things got in the way...

Anyway, I have cut the top off the plant, and it has been drying for nearly four days. Ready to plant? I'll put it in a succulent soil mix I got from my local nursery.

Hello bwv998,

That's okay I have been busy too Smiling

If the cut end looks callused enough, you can plant it in your porous media. Just don't water yet, it has to grow roots. Then put in warm shady side to acclimate.

Sometimes succulents goes into a last burst of growth when seasons change in Fall. Then they rest again in winter, so be very careful in watering.
In my area, we are still getting very warm temps, so it varies by location how succulents adapt.

Thank you for your understanding, @tarev! Does this look good enough?

Right now the temperatures here are cooling off, so how exactly often should I water it? Highs are around the 70s to 80s, but the indoor temperature is usually about 80°.

Looks okay to plant. Just stick it in your well draining soil, and do not water yet. It will just grow roots at its own time. Your temps are quite good, just ideal for the plant to acclimate and resume growth, preferably in part shade.

Done! Soil looks kinda dry; how many days should I wait till I water it?

The cutting has enough stored water in its leaves, so I would not worry about watering yet. What is important is for the plant to grow roots, once it grows roots then it can get moisture from the soil if it gets moist.

You can lightly spritz the soil after a couple of days, just very light and leave it alone.

@tarev, the plant is bending like this —is it O.K.? Should I re-trim it again?

It is trying to seek more light the way it bends. Is it possible to move container outdoors, in more light? You may want to stake it to help train a bit.

@tarev,

I've done so. Should I move it in in the night? The lows will drop to the low 50s/high 40s.

Yes bring it in, if your temps are getting too cool overnight. It prefers to be on a warmer ambiance.

@tarev,

Hello, I have been out yesterday. Looking at the plant, it is showing some stress. Usually I see that when it is getting too hot and dry, so it is trying to conserve its resources, or maybe getting too dried out.

Have you watered the plant lately? Also is it getting enough light?

No problem, @tarev. I only water the plant a tiny bit. Should I be watering it more? As for the sun, suddenly fall has set in to Massachusetts and outside is pretty cold — 59°F to be exact. Furthermore, it's pretty cloudy. So I've been keeping it indoors, but I move it around the house when there's sun.

Thank You!

Usually, when the succulent has rooted already, I give it a good thorough watering till water gushes out below and then allow it to dry out. Plus this plant loves the sun, so it maybe doing two types of stress condition, thirsty and needs light. Indoors during the cold season is rather a dicey time for succulents, typically they tend to need to be drier with more warmth. But since your plant is showing too thirsty, I would try to give it a bit more water, but go hands off, till you see your media go dry. But do provide a bit more light for it.

Oh yes, your outdoor temps are cold now. If you have a south facing window, I would position it there. But not too near the window, since the glass will be cold.

If you have a bamboo skewer or even a wooden toothpick, dip it in the soil, and if it comes out damp, then the soil is still wet, so you can delay your next watering. This plant hates being wet and cold.

Thank you, @tarev! I've just soaked it thoroughly. Currently its location is next to a SE window on top of a radiator. Will try to move to a south window soon. Not sure how strong the roots are yet.

Hopefully the plant will survive through winter. My home is pretty cold around then — 60°F, because of the expensive heating costs. But many of my succulents manage to survive through that...

60F is still okay for them, just keep it drier by then, but they will love light. The succulents will slow down growing too, a bit of a rest, and will return vigor in Spring.
