Does anyone in zone 4/5 grow Cape Blanco. I just bought a little pot at Lowe's and noticed it says hardy to 20 degrees. I thought it would be hardier than that.

Pam, mine has gone as low as 5 F for a short period of time. It is pretty hardy. I'm not sure what your lows are like. Snow cover helps also. We don't get snow but rarely here. Goldfinch, do you grow this plant?

I've had okay success with this in zone 4 - I do get good snow cover, but it's variable how well it comes through the winter. In some plantings it dies back completely leaving bare spots, so it isn't really really hardy.

I'm had pretty much the same results as Jacki. We usually get quite a bit of snow, but the winds kept most of the snow off of it last winter and it didn't do as well.

It is worth trying to keep it happy though, as it's so unique. That heavy 'bloom' (the waxy coating) is a standout. Then when it blooms (with the flowers!) it's very pretty. Mine colours up to a purple pink colour when the cold temperatures arrive in the fall, too.

Thanks, everyone. I wonder if I should put it in a pot in the garage. We can be at 0 or less on January nights. We do have plenty of snow cover.

Hi Holly
Yep, I picked mine up at Lowe's also. They really have had a great selection of succulents this year.

Cape Blanco is one of my very favorite sedum. Jacki is right, well worth keeping it happy. Just give it really good drainage. Not sure but it might go partially dormant in your part of the country Pam.

Yes I looked at that 20 degree temp. I'm putting mine in a pot that will come inside to over winter but I was thinking I might divide the pot and plant part of it outside and just see if it would overwinter outside.

I'll probably treat mine as an inside container plant. I bought a small 4 plug tray so the plants are small.

I know my Cape Blanco has made it through 10 degree weather here with no snow cover.

We often get a week in January where the nights can fall to -10 or a little more.

Zone 4 is for -20 and that's what I usually go by. Most of the maps for this area of PA say 6, but the maps don't take into account the Pocono Mts and other hill top areas. Most plants rated for 5 and 6, just can't survive the winters.

This spring was warmer, but in 09, the spring was so cool, the trees didn't leaf out until the first of June. We had a hard freeze May 22.

It seems most of us have gone through so really big weather changes this year. I know we have here. Starting today we will be in the 90's and next Mon. & Tue. are suppose to be in the 100's. Crying Not looking forward to it. The good side of it is that my tomatoes will start ripening. Thumbs up The silver lining in the clouds. Big Grin

I only have two containers of tomatoes. Cherry t's are ok, but Early Girl has such small fruit.

I have 17 heirloom varieties of medium to large tomatoes and 7 different kinds of cherry tomatoes. I will take pictures soon. I got everything planted so late this year. Have tomatoes finally, but they are all green. : (
