This grass cropped up in my garden. Is it a legitimate ornamental grass or a weed? Thanks.

Unless you consider sedge ornamental, it is a weed. In fact it is very hard to get rid of it as it grows from a "nut" often deep under ground and spreads enthusiastically.

Key word: enthusiastically

Which suggests (and rightly so) that this plant is excuberant in its endeavor to take over your yard (and happy to do so).

Looks like a carex, not nut sedge.

Lotta peeps plant carex on purpose... Very different growth habit.

This is nut sedge:

I agree Carex.

I have nut sedge/grass, all throughout our 'lawn'... Yellow Nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus)

This one does look more like a Carex, though I'm not sure which one.

I still think it is a yellow sedge. The leaves look too rigid and strongly keeled to be Carex.
