Thread OP

Hello,
I am a special education teacher at Lenape High School in Medford NJ. I teach a class of students with multiple disabilities and I would love to establish a school garden for my multiply disabled students. I know my students would benefit greatly from the total experience of creating, planting, and cultivating a garden. It would be cross curricular, so our teachers would plan lessons in Science, Math, and English to accompany our garden. I also teach Living Skills, so we could prepare the vegetables and make healthy meals in our kitchen. As you can see, I am excited about the possibility.
Let me if you can help me.

Thanks so much,
Kathy Waldron

Hi Kathy,

Your students would definitely benefit from a school garden. Please contact our friends at KidsGardening.org - they have many resources to help educators who are starting up school gardens.

best,

Hi Kathy, yes, keep up the great work!
I bought a greenhouse from a firm that is known for helping schools with their gardening projects. You might also contact them.

Hi @KathyWaldron and welcome to garden.org. I am a Master Gardener here in Florida and run a school garden at my local Elementary school. Our County Extension service has grants for school gardens available here. You might want to check if your local Extension service or Master Gardeners have such a program.

At the very least, the local Master Gardeners will surely volunteer to come and help you teach the kids.
