I had a 6 peat pots with nice sized oriental poppy seedlings growing in each one. They were grouped together on a wire rack set on top of a large square tray. I went out to check them today and they were ... gone. Completely gone. They only visible sign of the culpret was a slimy residue on the sides of a few of the peat pots. Mind you, this tray was on top of a deck railing almost 5 feet off the ground. The only thing different I did was to water the peat pots last nite. I usually water in the early morning. The weather overall has been hot and very dry for the past 8 days. I know slugs are much more active when things are moist and cooler. Did just a change in my watering routine cause this? Would sprinkling slug bait on top of peat pots/flower pots keep the slimy buggers away?

In hot weather, slugs are attracted by any water and they operate at night and early in the morning. If you watered your peat pots and some water drained down the railing supports, they'd follow the trail of water to the plants. It's always better to water early in the morning, btw to prevent fungal infections because the plants and soil surface dry out when the sun comes up.

If you put slug bait on the soil in the peat pots, the bait - well, its a bait so it attracts the slugs to eat it but then it kills them. I'd also put a little slug bait around the bases of the deck supports so they will find the bait before they climb up to get to your plants.

Just use a very few slug bait pellets but make sure to put down a sprinkle every few days to keep the slugs away. More is not better -- sometimes the smell of the chemical drives them away if there's too much in one spot.

Thanks for the info Elaine. Never thought about putting the bait around the bases of the deck supports. Thumbs up
