Man, you've been through the mill lately J. I agree with Elaine. Good PT's are amazing and really do make a huge difference.

Melanie, those butterflies are almost laying eggs on top of one another's. Crazy! I have to say the photos of those eggs were fabulous. I swear I can almost make out little cats inside.

Aww shucks, Ann. It's the new camera, not me! Hilarious! Mom and I have the Florida Wildflower Symposium coming up next month in Silver Springs and I just signed us up for the Florida Birding and Wildlife Festival in Ruskin in October. I can't wait to use the heck out of my camera! FYI, Dr. Jaret Daniels from UF (and author of my butterfly field guide) is giving a talk and then a butterfly walk at the FL Wildflower Symposium. I already warned Mom that I'm going to stalk that man until he takes out a restraining order. Rolling on the floor laughing

Jim, that looks like an Eastern Tailed Blue, and isn't that just an Orange Sulphur (not Orange-Barred)? They don't have those dots. Jack's always taking pictures of them. Help me out, Jack!

Ronnie, that's called tenacity! Oh, and that's a Red-Banded Hairstreak.

Okay, I think I'm done with my genealogy pictures, so let's catch up with my butterflies!

As I said, when you're gone for over a week, you come back to caterpillar round up. Or just egg-laying Gulf Frits. They never stop!

My Unicorn Moths have pupated! The one went first, and the other one did it the next day.

The Pipevine ST hit me hard.

My Spicebush eggs have been duds or parasatized recently, so I got pretty happy to find actual leaf shelters. If you're caterpillar hunting for Spicebush STs, this is what you look for.

The mosquitoes were about to carry me away, so I had to open my caterpillar present inside. This is just one. I found three, and then I found more eggs later.

Thumb of 2016-08-07/mellielong/2bf8ef

The Sennas I planted out front may not be very big yet, but I'm already finding caterpillars!

Duskywings love porterweed when they're not on Spanish Needles.

Thumb of 2016-08-07/mellielong/227dc1

I swear butterflies can see through that chrysalis. I walked outside the other day to feed the cats, and I come back in to find this wrinkly Black Swallowtail. How do they know when I leave the room? Hilarious!

WooHoo and a first for me and BooHoo too

Ok - so the woohoo was a first for me. I actually saw a monarch(s) laying eggs. Super special for me cause I have never seen this before! And neat this season cause up til today, I had not seen any eggs.

But BooHoo too. Crying

I checked carefully where I watched the Monarch lay eggs and found an egg. Ran in to tell my wife. By the time I got back - just a couple of minutes - something had pierced and ate the contents of the egg. Sighing!

BUT ... The Monarch(s) kept coming back to this area of Tropical MW and laid eggs on several plants. AND one laid some eggs on MW in one of my other areas. Tomorrow I will check leaves and see how many eggs I might find.

Thanks Melanie. BTW - my Spanish Needle and Blue Porterweed from seed both doing fine. The former is getting HUGE. Not blooming much at all - only a couple of flowers. The Porterweed is just starting to bloom. Cute. Thank You!

Oh yeah! Now this website with lots of visuals really cinched the differences for me. No longer in the dark about black morph tigers now! Thanks so much for sharing this Thank You!
"My work is loving the world. Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird — equal seekers of sweetness. Here the clam deep in the speckled sand. Are my boots old? Is my coat torn? Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me keep my mind on what matters, which is my work which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished." — Mary Oliver, from Messenger
