Don't panic! Chances are you'll be fine with your purchases. Just keep a close eye on them while enjoying your walk through your gardens! I forgot to mention that I have more trouble with the hostas with a larger white center like Loyalist. Sometimes I just put mine in pots and move them around to see where they're going to be happiest! Good luck with them and enjoy!

Thank you Rose.. I finally moved Loyalist to complete shade to see if that worked. Loyalist sure is beautiful. One of my favorites. Perhaps the solid shade and increased water will make it happier.

I took a closer look at that Frances Williams this morning. that variety is actually a little lightly thick and puckered anyway.

After comparing it to close up views of ones in the data base... It really doesn't look that different and their is no bleeding or real mottling.... on any of the veins. Just that one leave that looks like it has suffered a train wreck.

That damage could be caused by abrasion.

After intense comparison to the smooth looking one and comparing the smooth looking one to the database images I conclude the smooth one is not Frances Williams.

These 2 Hosta came from a Nursery not Walmart. It must be labeled wrong.

Here is Frances from the Database... It is naturally puckered a bit and a lighter shade exactly like the one we thought looked less healthy and slightly puckered. My gut instinct is that everything is ok. πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜ŠπŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»

I have made some beautiful purchases.

So I called the Nursery I purchased Frances from and they let me bring it back. The woman told me she had never heard of the X virus so I told her about it. She says the unsightly leaves was weather damage from the spring hail storms we had back when the leaves were first emerging.

As a tolken of good will she let me pick out another plant of my choice, I even chose one that was more expensive and she happily gave it to me.

While I was out the Nursery I found the match to this Hosta. This Hosta is 'Earth Angel'. Yay!!!

I'll look that one up.

On my way home I stopped at Lowe's. You never know what you'll find on sale.

I saw a lush looking Hosta table and headed over to see if I could identify the virus. Right as I arrived at the Hosta table the manager walked by asking me if I was finding everything ok.

I asked him if he had heard of the X virus and he did!!!

We talked a little and he informed me he was a Hosta fan and had not seen any of the virus in his stock for a few years.

Then I started checking prices and it blew me away, These 'Diana Remembered' 1 gallon Hosta were $7. (NOT ON SALE) Each plant had 4+ sections.

I bought 6 because they are variagated, sun tolerant, a fast grower, and at $7 to put then in 4 hours of daily sun is a mistake I can afford to make if it doesn't do well. nodding nodding

Four hours of sun shouldn't hurt the majority of hosta. I have one bed that gets sun until about 1:00 and, if watered, they are doing just fine. I think you also get better blooms if they get some sun. I think the really hot afternoon sun is hard on them, but if you keep them watered they will still do okay. Glad you were able to take the plant back. You'll love Earth Angel!

I'm a little bit worried because this particular spot Gets sun from 10:30 to 2:30.

These August days are so darn hot for newly planted ANYTHING. I may put a milk crate or clothes basket over them to shield them for the next five weeks until temps cool off.

I planted two DIANA in that location.

I planted another 2 Diana in a location that is full shade except sun from 2:30pm to 4:00pm
And then another location that is full shade except sun from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.

Fingers crossed. I'll water them every morning and night.

My Liberty will receive sprinkled shade from 10:30 to 11:30 and direct sun from 11:30am to 12:30pm then solid shade until dusk.

hoping it works! Thumbs up

Earth Angel gets solid shade all day except sprinkled sunlight from 10:30 to 12:00pm

Wide Brim is in mostly solid shade with dappled sunlight at high noon.

And I identified the no tagged one from reading right above the barcode on its old pot. "Queen Josephine"

This is my Queen Josephine.

Some of my Hosta are showing a tiny bit of stress and heat scorch probably due to limited afternoon or evening sun exposure.

😟 I'll have to remedy that situation.

The Hosta that so far appear to be doing the very best are

Earth Angel
Wide Brim
Ivory Queen
Sum and substance
Diana remembered
Minuteman
And 1 Liberty
Twilight
Moonstruck

All of these are receiving solid shade or sprinkled shade with the exception of Diana who is receiving more sun.

The ones struggling are
Loyalist and 1 Liberty

Most like this is a location problem.

A well designed site. Thanks for the link. As I live in Canada, I'm not able to order from them but it's well worth checking nursery sites for info as some are very helpful. In the case of the site above, I've actually requested permission to include some of their pictures in a hosta presentation I've been asked to give to a local gardening club in January.

I wouldn't know enough to do that at this point but perhaps in the future.
