That cockatoo reminds me of those rotten kids that walk by and pull off agapanthus flowers just for the hell of it. Glare

Deer have eaten Iris here, but it's not their preferred food. Rabbits have left my Iris alone for the most part. I just had a gopher get in one of my beds, and do guite a bit of damage. I'll see what I can salvage when I get back home. I did get him with a trap just before we left yesterday though. Good riddance!

That was a fascinating article. A flock of them pulling the wood off my house would be horrifying.

I guess I'm lucky the damage to my condo was not worse. I couldn't imagine a bunch of cockatoos attacking a home.

Well, today, I noticed that something had chomped off the puny leaves (and left them there) of one of the 'Clarence' rhizomes that I had planted out. Grumbling There's not a gopher mound nearby, so I figure that it has to be the rabbits - which (as far as I know) aren't supposed to like irises!!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I guess now I will have to start rabbit spraying the irises!

Curiously enough, other in-ground irises on this side of the creek, as well as the potted irises, continue to be unmolested. Confused

The rabbit(s) got a second 'Clarence' rhizome last night/this morning, the one right next to the previously eaten one. I gave up and got the rabbit spray out, and doused the remaining bits of foliage (looking down onto and into the rhizome) and also the newly planted iris across the path.

Is there any chance for these to grow back? The leaves were chomped down to the rhizome, literally. (No biggie if they don't - I have more 'Clarence' - but I'm preparing myself in case they go after one of the iris I got this year.)

More like Warp needs to do a better job of hunting! (But as he is mostly indoors when we are indoors...)

I am pretty sure I know where one of their shelter/hiding spots (if not nests) is... which is under our deck. I warned DH that if we didn't put up some sort of wire around the bottom of it, that critters would get under there. But no, he won't have it... too unattractive... Glare And Warp can only crawl in there so far (for which I perhaps should be thankful, otherwise he would have had a very nasty encounter with a raccoon late one night...).

The answer to if they can grow back is yes. As long as the rhizome is still firm, keep it from getting g dried out and it will probably sprout new little increases. Protect the increase until they get bigger and you should be good to go.

Ya know, last year I had a horrible problem with 'something' eating and nibbling my iris rhizomes. I thought for the longest time it was my resident Squirrel. Only to find out that he
was not the culprit at all. My property is also inhabited by Moles and Chipmunks. The moles
have devastated my lawns with holes, and the Chipmunks just love to dig in all of my potted
Iris and Clematis and Lilies. Crying

Chipmunks in the pots? Wow...

I am sure we have moles; something is certainly devastating our weedy lawn (there are mounds of dirt all over), but I thought it was gophers, which we have definitely had in the past.

I wonder if the Rabbit & Groundhog repellent would work on chipmunks or squirrels...

I have been told by my daughter that chipmunks get in the pots and dig, so could very well be chipmunks.
