I wish we had more good ones too!! My best friend has a slumlord for a landlord. The landlady promised all sorts of things then didn't do it. The landlady also skirted codes and got away with it. The place is solid though so she just avoids looking at certain things and keeps it as clean as she can. Sighing!

So thanks Debbie for doing your part to keep things right. Thank You!

Since this is the recipe thread I won a basket at work today. It had homemade jams from a coworker (carrot cake and peach cobbler) and pumpkin cake mix. I'm going to take the jams and pour them over cream cheese and serve with graham crackers for Thanksgiving. They won't last an hour once family gets a taste of them.

Well, it is a business for us, but at the same time, we need to provide everyone with the same safe, secure place to live, like we were living there too. So we take care of them as if we did live in them which we once did. Don't want to be slumlords, the fines that would be imposed on us to bring things up to code are astronomical! So gotta do things right the first time.

If I was there, it wouldn't last 10 minutes! Yum!

Has anyone ever "ground" up avocado pits in their VitaMix? I would like to do that, as per instructions in one of my "Prevention" magazines. It said "heavy duty" blender. I have a VitaMix 5200. Whaddya think? Would it hang together if I threw a pit in there and turned it on??? Green Grin!

Why don't you call or email the company, Anna? Those things are too expensive to experiment with. It could ruin it. My mom had one, but we never put in anything hard like an avocado pit. Are they supposed to be healthy?

Anyone remember laetrile? Decades ago, it was a compound made out of fruit seeds, supposed to cure cancer. I remember having patients who talked of going to Mexico to get it. I don't think it was ever available in the U.S.

Nonetheless, eating avocado pits doesn't tempt me. Hilarious!

I posted this in the Healthy Eating Thread. Oddly, no one was interested so I though I'd post it here. Some good-for-you food:

If you don't want to go through the trouble of making yogurt, it is very easy to make Greek Yogurt from regular yogurt.

Get a big container of regular plain yogurt, your choice Lo fat, non fat or regular.
Place a coffee filter into a sieve and hang over a bowl. Put yogurt into the filter. Cover with Saran or Press and Seal. Refrigerate over night or longer. The whey will drain from the yogurt and you will be left with the thickened Greek-style yogurt. If you continue to let it drain for an extra day, you will be left with the even thicker yogurt cheese.

Mix in fruit, honey etc to naturally sweeten your Greek Yogurt. You can add herbs and spices to Yogurt Cheese for a good spread on crackers or in place of cream cheese on a bagel.

Cheryl maybe no one was interested in the yogurt because it takes time to do it, we tend to be a lazy bunch. Hilarious! I can't eat yogurt because of dairy intolerance.

I don't know why one would buy regular yogurt and make Greek out of it? Why not just buy the Greek? OK, am I missing something here? Am I really dumb? Hilarious! And yes, I guess I am lazy. I don't see any reason to make more work for myself...

kqcrna - since it is a gardening forum, I might assume you grow your own food. Yes? Ok, maybe you just do flowers. But, wouldn't that fall in the category of why create work for myself, they have all that at the store? Gene

Yes, I mostly grow flowers, tons of beautiful ones. I do grow my own tomatoes and herbs. I have grown a few other veggies, like carrots and beets. But home grown tomatoes are the one veggie that just tastes so much better to me than store bought. I'd just as soon buy the rest of my veggies.

I generally grow my tomatoes, and flowers, from seeds, because that way I get a much, much better selection. And some I've grown from cuttings and layering.

Last winter we spent 5 weeks in Florida, and then we both had health issues to deal with when we got home. As a result, I didn't start anything from seed and had to buy all plants for the first time in many years. Disappointing.

If you look at the label of your sweetened yogurt you may think differently about buying Greek Yogurt. Of course making it it takes time but really, dumping it into a sieve and letting it sit over night to drain is hard?! So is baking your own cookies and cakes. I don't get it?? You get the best tasting Greek Yogurt this way sweetened to your own preference without chemicals.

Pretty sure the VitaMix could handle it, the pits are fairly soft...I use a knife to get them out and does not take much to put a blade into the pit. Calling the company is a good idea, I had one for 22 years, amazing machine.

I would sweeten it the same way Dannon does: with artificial sweeteners (chemicals, in your terms) because my husband is a brittle, insulin-dependent, Type 1 diabetic. The Dannon Greek only has about 9 grams of carbs, and 12 grams of protein, perfect for him. We weigh and measure every morsel of food he eats and calculate each gram of carb for every meal and every snack of the day. And I am a heart patient so the fact that it has no saturated fat, no cholesterol, low sodium, and lots of protein makes it good for me, too. We like the taste of it. We usually have it with whatever fresh berries we can get at the time. Yesterday it was 3 lb. of beautiful fresh strawberries from Ca and 1.5 lb. of beautiful fresh blueberries from Argentina. Yes, a special trip to Sam's just for fresh berries.

Baking cakes and cookies? No, I never do and never did. I mostly cook wholesome meals.

Really, you don't have to approve of my diet or my husband's. But we are following the advice of medical experts and I think we'll stick with that, thanks. These professionals include internal medicine, endocrinologist, cardiologist, and a team of dietitians.

Now please, stop harassing me over not making my own yogurt. Sheesh.

Karen

Likes and dislikes, medical needs, product accessibility, energy levels, finances ..so much plays into our dietary preferences.

I am guilty of getting so excited about something ..( OK Paleo wasn't my best idea ) ( but I STILL SAY ATKINS WAS!) that I want to share it and talk it up and sell it to all my relatives and friends. Because it excites me and I want them to understand what I am excited about...I can miss their cues. My sis gets so darn aggravated with me. My friends just tolerate it because I am so darn cute and lovable and they know I mean well. But, in hindsight I realize as my husband says " enough already!! I am not gonna eat that stuff! YOU EAT IT FOR BOTH OF US! But I do mean well, my heart is in the right place.

Yes, Rosie, you are SO darned cute and lovable. And your meals and cooking sound delicious to me. And you're so creative with it, too.

I'd love to have you as my cook!
