Propagate Shrubs in the Fall

By sandnsea2
October 13, 2011

Fall is a great time to increase your shrubs. When pruning Euonymous and Forsythia, remove the bottom leaves from good stems and put them (6 inches deep) where you want a new plant.

I did that last fall with some burg cuttings when I ran out of pots for all of them and then covered with frost cloth. That was Oct. 15th and when I uncovered them March 15 to my surprise, I had new plants.

Janice what is your growing zone? I love this idea. You mean all I have to do is take cuttings and stick them in the ground over winter (zone 8)?
Wonder if that would work with the Callicarpa 'Profusion'?

You're welcome, Tami and Ann!

Jeri, that is great!! Nice photos, too!

Lynn, I am in zone 7A. It works especially well with Forsythia, which is easy to root. Have never tried Callicarpa, but I'd give it a try.

You can also take a long branch of Forsythia, leave it attached to the shrub, and bury it underground holding it in place with a stone.
Pull the leaves off that branch at the place where it will be buried (they form roots at the leaf axils) and cut off the tip, prior to burying it.

Then, in the Spring, you can cut the branch from the shrub and move it, with its new root system, to where you want the shrub.

Some cuttings will not take, for whatever reason. You can use rooting hormone, if you wish, though I never do.

Good to experiment with different plants and see what you have good success with.

Have fun with it!

Hilarious! Here it is a treasured small shrub. Lovey dubby
I haven't noticed if the birds eat the berries or not, in the winter?

Yes, many bird species feed on the Callicarpa fruit. My plant is usually stripped bare by Spring.

@valleylynn, what was the result of this? Did it work for you with the Callicarpa?

It didn't take. Sad
I could be because I had some one taking care of that boarder last year. They may have removed it.
I will definitely give it a try this coming spring. Maybe even bend a stem down this fall.
