@5601Lisa @Shy_gardner

Lisa & Donna,

Glad to hear you'll both be making it to the swap. 24 days and counting!

There are several in the group that diddle around with orchids. You might even consider bring your most 'challenged' one for a hands on q and a.

Too funny! Larry, my other half, calls the one shrub that we have a Nettyifita (netty-if-it-a) because we got it from our neighbor Netty. It's actually a double-flowering kerria japonica. I'm sure he remembers the real name, but likes his better.

Me too, and just for what it's worth I think Jack Fowler should be flogged around the fleet for naming a nice orchid after himself in such an awkward, un-spell-able name.

The boffins who name orchids may be highly educated but they sure aren't always sagacious.

Well, Jack Fowler got justice handed to him when they renamed his genus to Iwanagaara. He is now just a sagacious footnote in boffin lore. Whistling

Wait! I thought it was the other way around?

Jeff, that kind of sagacious is what happens before you get liposuction . . ..

Btw Jack Fowlie was a known Orchid expert or should I say Orchid Enthusiast as he is officially described, and the editor of Orchid Digest! ( gorgeous magazine, I subscribe to it, the last volume has a great article on the pollination of Epipactis helleborine, we discussed this terrestrial here in a couple of recent threads) I believe he died a few years ago and so some orchids were named after him. Rolling my eyes.

Ok, guess we'll have to forgive Jack, then since he was dead when the re-naming silliness happened.

Jim, I was about to yodel for happiness that Jackfowlieara was renamed to Iwanagaara. So I went to the RHS register.
💥 Poof, there went my smile and my yodel, it is still according to them a Jackfowlieara.

Sitting here happily reading said Orchid Digest, when I realize that the article Chinese Paphiopedilum jackii and its hybrids deals with an Orchid named also for Jack Fowlie. Was it renamed? Ah, it was a separate species named Paph hiepii and it was reclassified as jackii var. hiepii. However goes the article on, this is now a synonym of Paph jackii. It also used to be the synonym Paph malipoense var hiepii.
Alrighty! Smiling

Well, I should have checked. I see now that Jackfowlieara is in and Iwanagaara is out. I better hit the send button before it changes.
